Janet Hazlett Obituary

Janet Hazlett

Janet Hazlett was welcomed into God's arms on December 4th, 2020. Janet died peacefully in her pre-dawn sleep while in hospice care, having received Last Rites the night before.

Born in Tacoma Washington on January 15th, 1944 first child of Clarence and Loretta Hawker, she came to Arizona in 1960. Tucson and Tempe were home for most of her life. She graduated from U. of A. and was a medical technologist.

Janet was quiet, but when she spoke it was with pronounced introspection and intelligence. If the subject was plants, her knowledge modestly eclipsed all others. Any botanist going up against Janet in a Latin "Name This Succulent" would definitely lose. Badly.

Her life was extremely full. She was a 'passport-holder' at the Desert Botanical Garden and an active, card-holding member of the Cactus & Succulents Club.

Many will remember her two decades within the Tempe Public Library's Friends Bookstore, where Janet sorted and curated donations as well as assisted patrons with her vast recall of the collection.

To friends, Janet was a perfect companion for board games and tea or the occasional treat of her favorite Mexican dish, chile relleno. Memories of her values and disposition guide us all to be better people. She will be deeply missed.

Funeral mass will be at Church of the Holy Spirit, 1800 E. Libra Drive,Tempe at 10 AM Wednesday December 30 followed by internment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery; rosary at 9:30.

Jan was a quiet, kind person but full of information. I learned so much in Microbiology from her. She was one of my mentors in my very first microbiology job. I also learned so much about planting vegetables to in our hot and arid Tucson climate.

Jan was one of my mentors when I was a fledgling microbiologist. She was a great teacher and was the go to person when I had questions about my garden.
She was a great person, I really liked her.
May she be at peace.
