Jeffrey Underwood Obituary

Jeffrey Owen Underwood, 25, of Paradise Valley, passed away Thursday, January 30, 2003. Jeff was born June 2, 1977 in Portland, Oregon to Jon and Tammy Underwood. He attended the University of Arizona, where he majored in Regional Development and was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. Those who knew Jeff witnessed his strength: of mind, spirit and body. Jeff was genuine, thoughtful, and kind and an independent thinker. He shared his gifts of creativity and a hilarious sense of humor that spanned dry wit to goofy slapstick. Throughout his life, Jeff treasured his friendships. He enjoyed memories of good times spent with friends and was grateful for the love and support they gave him. Jeff loved sports, especially basketball, from informal pickup games to watching college games-especially the Arizona Wildcats-on TV. He enjoyed playing the drums and loved a wide variety of music. Jeff's family and friends cherish his memory. Survivors include his parents, Jon and Tammy Underwood of Paradise Valley; sister Terrye Underwood of Los Angeles; grandmother Lila Underwood of Placentia, CA: grandmother Mella Bailey of Coronado, CA; aunt and uncles Terrye and Robert Bellas of Portola Valley, CA; cousin Erika Bellas of San Francisco, CA; cousins Tamsinn and Chris Cowart of Boulder, CO; aunt and uncle Judi and Richard Duffy of Placentia, CA; cousin Erin Duffy of Placentia, CA and cousins Christina, Rylan and Brian Duffy of Victorville, CA. There are few people that you come across in your life and can tell instantly that they are truly special. Jeff was without a doubt one of those people. Although we lost touch after college, I feel so lucky and thankful for the friendship that Jeff and I shared. Unfortunately for us, the world has lost an amazing person. My deepest sympathies go out to all of Jeff's family and friends. He will be missed.

I'll always be grateful that right before I graduated, I was fortunate enough to spend some time with Jeff, and have a couple of great conversations. At that time, I realized why Jeff was such a popular member of the fraternity. I finally got to see what a funny, smart, and unique character Jeff was. My guess is that right about now, Jeff and brother Gordon Stahl are enjoying some laughs and memories together. My thoughts and prayers to the Underwood Family.

Unfortunately, Jeff's life and my friendship with Jeff were really quite similar.... both were all too short, and sweet all the same. I've lost touch with Jeff in recent years, but have thought of him often, and remembered all of the fond memories that I was able to share with him for the short time I knew him. I grew to love his cunning whit, his unique sense of humor, and his ability to wrap your head around his seemingly random, but often brilliant ideas. He exuded a certain sense of humble confidence and stability, so strong that you would feel it in yourself when you were around him. We will all miss Jeff very much, and remember him always.....

I had the opportunity to spend time with Jeff during my short time in Arizona. I have great memories of times spent with him at Star Pass, Sigma Chi and a trip up to Paradise Valley.

Of the many people I met while I was there, Jeff is one of a few people that I have often thought about and wondered where his life had led. I can only begin to try to imagine the sorrow and loss felt by those whose lives he touched everyday. My thoughts and best wishes go out to his family and friends.
