Wallace, Jocelyn Marshall
was born October 8 1928 in Madras, India. She was the daughter of Clifford Benjamin Marshall, President of Standard Oil and Clarice Stille Marshall of Brush Valley, PA. Her formative years in India, Tucson, AZ and Canandaigua, NY gave her balanced but vivid perspectives of humanity, the environment and especially to the strength of family. She entered Syracuse University at the age of 15 and was still taking classes in Astronomy and Physics in her 40's. In 1948, she married Carl Peter Swartz, ambassador from Sweden and spent the following years in Stockholm and Paris. It was during these years that she began her most important role as mother, giving birth to Eric Carl and Clarice Aileen. In 1958 she married Thomas Byron Gilchrist, Assistant U. S. District Attorney and father to Gail Gilchrist, Juliet Hunter Gilchrist and Thomas Byron Gilchrist III. During these years in Chappaqua and South Salem, NY, she gave birth to Clifford Benjamin Marshall Gilchrist, Robert Angus Christian Gilchrist and Alexander Jock Goodman Gilchrist. The ensuing years revealed a woman who would mother 8 children until her last moments, with natural grace and beauty and laughter. She married Henry Brown Wallace, President of Pioneer Hybrid and father to Joan, Diane and Henry in 1980. Living in the high desert of Arizona and the Colorado Rockies, her quest in philanthropy and her battle for her own health began in earnest. She survived breast cancer, lung cancer and melanoma through alternative medicine as well as heart disease, hydraencephalitis and countless surgeries through standard medicine. At the same time she helped fund causes ranging from gifted children in rural communities, Arizona State University scientific research to the Blue Ocean Institute. She is survived by her daughters Clarice Aileen Gilchrist and Juliet Hunter Gilchrist, her sons Thomas Byron Gilchrist III, Clifford Benjamin Marshall Gilchrist, Robert Angus Christian Gilchrist and Alexander Jock Goodman Gilchrist, her grandchildren Chloe Linnaea Gilchrist, Lily Gilchrist, Aisley Ann Jocelyn McCloskey, Demarest Marguerite Clarice McCloskey, and her close friend Sheba. Services will be held privately in Poughkeepsie and Canandaigua, NY. In lieu of flowers, gifts to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and The Blue Ocean Institute would serve Jocelyn's intentions appropriately.
