Korak, John
94, of Sun City passed away on March 9, 2015. John Korak, 94, of Sun City went home to be with the Lord on March 9, 2015 and joined his beloved wife Nerine. He loved life, left a lasting impression with everyone he met and will be missed by many.
Born in Croswell, Michigan, John considered Mansfield, Ohio his hometown. Growing up on a modest farm he joined the U.S. Navy to eventually become a deep sea diver instructor. John was assigned to the U.S.S. Arkansas for 3 years. On the PC464 he did convoy duty in the Caribbean between Key West and Guantanamo Bay. He attended Norton Heights Navel School in Connecticut to become an instructor for communications. He was discharged after 6 years. He soon realized the Navy life was more appealing and he re-enlisted. He signed up and completed diving school. He was assigned to the U.S.S. Submarine Force aboard the Auxiliary Submarine Rescue vessels. He handled rescue work and salvage work. He later went on to become a deep sea diving instructor. He spent several years at Pearl Harbor helping to clear the debris and wreckage and worked on the deck of the U. S. S. Arizona before it was turned into a Memorial and National Park. He completed his naval career in Michigan in 1961 where he was a recruiting officer. He was honored and felt privileged to take his 2014 Honor Flight to Washington, D. C. to see the World War II memorial. However, said it was an "emotional ordeal" but very special to him.
His love of traveling brought him to Orlando, Florida. He found work as a Pari Mutual clerk at the Jai Alai Fronton and worked at several horse tracks including the Kentucky Derby. In 1971, the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas offered him a job working at Jai Alai Fronton where he spent the next 11 years
He finally retired in Sun City, where he became an active participant in the Community. He played softball for many years, joined bowling leagues, danced numerous hours at Sun Dial, while volunteering thousands hours at Boswell Memorial Hospital and the Sun City Senior Center. He spent his final years enjoying his life and friends at El Dorado.
John is survived by two nieces Carol A. (Seifert) Flood, and Judi L. (Seifert) Williams, a step-niece Mary Ann Wolven, 5 step-daughters Velna K. Adams, Susan Earnshaw, Karen (Adams) Murray, Jo Ann (Adams) Quillen, Patricia Adams and several, grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his lovely wife Nerine (Adams) Korak, his brother Joe Korak, his sister Barbara (Korak) Seifert and brother-in-law Joseph E. Seifert.
A viewing will take place at the Regency Mortuary, 9850 W. Thunderbird Blvd, Sun City will be held Friday, March 13, 2015 at 1:00 pm. A celebration of life will be held after the viewing on March 13, 2015 at 2:30 at El Dorado located at 10330 West Thunderbird Blvd. Sun City AZ.
