John Peterson Obituary

JOHN W. PETERSON Gospel composer John W. Peterson went home to be with the Lord on September 20, 2006, at the age of 84. He passed into eternity very peacefully at his home in Scottsdale, Arizona, surrounded by his family. He was born in Lindsborg, Kansas, on November 1, 1921, and began his musical career while still in his teens. During World War II, he served as an Army Air Force pilot flying the famed "China Hump" and received an Air Medal Award. After the war, he attended Moody Bible Institute and went on to graduate from the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. While in Chicago, he was on staff at radio station WMBI and was responsible for several weekly programs. Shortly thereafter, John and his family settled in Montrose, Pennsylvania, where he continued his songwriting career while working as Music Editor at Singspiration, a sacred music publishing company. When the company was acquired by Zondervan Publishing House, he relocated his family to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he was President and Editor-in-Chief of Singspiration for over ten years. Then after moving to Scottsdale, he co-founded Good Life Productions and a few years later established the John W. Peterson Music Company. He served on several boards, including Gospel Films (now Gospel Communications) and Family Life Radio Network. He was a member of Scottsdale Bible Church for the past 34 years and had been very active as a board member and Enrichment Class teacher. His music has been loved and sung around the world. He has composed over 1,000 individual songs, including "It Took a Miracle," "Over the Sunset Mountains," and "Heaven Came Down." In addition, he has written 35 cantatas and musicals, such as "Night of Miracles," "No Greater Love," "Carol of Christmas," and "Love Transcending." As a composer, he was a long-time member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Throughout his life he received numerous honors and awards, some of which include: Sacred Music Award from the National Evangelical Film Foundation, International Composer of the Year from SESAC, The Music Achievement Award from Christian Artists, The Ray DeVries Church Music Award, Doctor of Sacred Music from John Brown University, Doctor of Divinity from Western Conservative Baptist Seminary, and Doctor of Fine Arts from Grand Canyon University. In 1977, his autobiography, "The Miracle Goes On," was published by Zondervan Publishing House, and a film by the same title was released by Gospel Films. In 1986, he was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. He is survived by his devoted wife Marie of 62 years; his three daughters, Sandi (Tom) Catzere, Candy Strader, and Pam (Teddy) Cruse of Freeport, Illinois; five grandchildren, Carrie Catzere of San Diego, California, Andy Strader, Scott (Courtney) Strader, John (Karine) Cruse of Freeport, Illinois, and Tammy Cruse; his sister Marie Rowe; and many special nieces and nephews. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and will be greatly missed, but we know that he was looking forward to seeing the Savior he served and wrote about for all these years. In reflecting on his life, the words he wrote some years ago have even more meaning today, "Jesus led me all the way." A Memorial Tribute service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 6 at Scottsdale Bible Church, 7601 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of the following: Phoenix Seminary, 4222 E. Thomas Road, Phoenix, AZ 85018; Southwestern College, 2625 E. Cactus Road, Phoenix, AZ 85032; or Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014. Arrangements by Messinger Indian School Mortuary.

Just learned this today. Great song writer, wonderful songs. I was especially blessed by his daughter's beautiful harmonies when they formed The Peterson Trio.

When my wife was a church secretary over thirty years ago, she and a colleague were laughing over some incident when the phone rang. She was still laughing when she answered. Upon discovering it was John W. Peterson, she apologized for laughing but he told her, "You made my day. It's good to hear someone laughing."

Having sung in youth choirs and having worked with church sound and lighting for many years, I was privileged to hear a great number of John W. Peterson's songs and cantatas over and over again during several rehearsals and performances. I never tired of hearing his music. It had a sound all its own. Even today, many years later, all I need to do is hear a song title and the music immediately comes to mind. I feel sorry for the present generation of young people who will never become familiar with John's numerous works because they're "old fashioned" and don't sound like today's contemporary tunes.

We first heard John's music when we attended Westmont college. When he moved to Scottsdale what a privilege to get to know him and Marie. His music reflected the scriptures and the message will go on for years to come. He was a great S.S. teacher and we learned so much from him. My prayers are for Marie and the family in the days ahead. Love, Janice

I learned of your music when I was in junior high through my Christian mother and have used it through the years to the present. You were a gift to us to spread Christianity and your music will continue to thrill humanity til kingdom come

The Holy Spirit inspired John over the years to write beautiful music with powerful lyrics. We had the privilege of playing his songs recorded by various Christian artists on our Northwestern College Radio Network over the years. He brought a new sound and a new song (as the Psalmist says) to our airwaves blessing thousands of listeners. His songs were at the core of our music format for many years.

On a personal note, I'll never forget hearing "It Took a Miracle" for the first time. It was at a live Percy Crawford telecast I attended at Moody Church, while a college student. I, and everyone in that vast audience, were thrilled by this new, annointed composition.

My prayers and sympathy to all the family members.

My heart fell this morning when I saw the news of John's passing in the newspapers. There are no words to express the way I feel. I have had the honor and pleasure of singing his wonderful music for many years. His music will live on forever as will our love for him. May God Bless him as he goes to make music for the Master! There will never be another John Peterson!

Sincerely,
Miki Coffman
