John Nicholas Udall

John Udall Obituary

John Nicholas Udall (known as "Nick"), a third-generation Arizonan
born July 23, 1913 in St. Johns, Arizona passed away on June 15, 2005 in Chandler, Arizona. He was the eldest surviving descendent of Arizona Mormon pioneer David King Udall. Nick married Sybil Webb in Washington D.C. in 1937 an they soon thereafter were sealed in the Arizona temple. They remained devoted companions until Sybil's passing in 1998. During their marriage, both rendered service in numerous religious and civil capacities. Nick's parents, John Hunt Udall and Ruth Kimball Udall, met while attending school at the Eastern Arizona College. When they attended a class in English Literature, they learned that the first English playwright to write comedy was Nicholas Udall in the 16th century. John and Ruth jokingly agreed that if they ever married, they would name their first son "Nicholas." They married and honored their mutual pledge. Nick's family heritage was a major influence on him throughout his life for rendering service to God and country. His father was the mayor of Phoenix from 1936 to 1938. Years later, Nick followed in his father's steps by being elected Mayor of Phoenix from 1948 to 1952. His paternal great-grandfather embraced the message of Mormon missionaries in England in the mid 19th century and immigrated to the United States and settled in central Utah. His paternal grandfather was instrumental in the settling of what is now known as St. Johns, Arizona in the late 19th century. Nick's mother was a sister of Spencer W. Kimball, with whom Nick had a close relationship throughout their lives. While Nick was still a baby, his mother suffered a terminal illness and passed away in 1915. John Hunt Udall later married Leah Smith in 1916, who was a loving and devoted mother to Nick. She had ten children born in her marriage to John Hunt Udall-King; Earl (Naomi Tew); Ruth (Dr. Woodrow Evans); Reed (Afton Webster); Jan (Chester Mortensen); Jesse (Ann Evans); Josephine (Dr. Lloyd Webster); Samuel (Helen Druke); Idella (Victor Flack) and Pauline (Brad Perkinson). Nick and all of his siblings maintained and cherished their close familial bonds during his life. Nick served in the East Central States Mission, attended Brigham Young University and the University of Arizona, and enrolled in law school at George Washington University, graduating in 1944. He returned to Arizona in 1947 and practiced law briefly before serving as Mayor of Phoenix (elected to three terms). Subsequently, Nick was elected a judge of the Maricopa County Superior Court from 1952 to 1956. He then returned to private practice and joined the firm of Jennings, Strouss, Salmon and Trask for the remainder of his legal career. Later in life, Nick was an LDS bishop for the Phoenix Third Ward for five years and also served as a stake patriarch. Nick and Sybil also traveled extensively later in life. Nick is survived by his wife, Joan Romney Udall, all of Joan's seven children and their spouses, and all seven of his children: John (Rosalyn) - Charleston, WV; Kimball (Sharyn) - Santa Fe, NM; Lee (Janet) - Phoenix; Teresa Kniskern (James) - Anacortes, WA; Robert - Phoenix; Laurie Greaves (Brad) - Visalia, CA; and Larry (Nancy) - Chandler; 14 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Nick has had such an illustrious life and was acquainted with so many famous and outstanding people that his family encouraged him to write his life story, which he completed shortly before his death. Nick's life can best be summed up by the title of his autobiography - "The Wonder Of It All!" Nick has left a great legacy and will be greatly missed by his loved ones. Much love to the Udall Family! Our family, Van & Thelma Gold, Linda, Carol, Bill, Brenda, Marsha, Tami, moved to Phx 3rd Ward from SLC in 1953. There were many times Nick or Sybil were teachers or leaders of us. We all have memories of doing things with their children. THANKS! Also, thanks for the long obituary. It was good to read more about him and his families. Love to all of you, Marsha Gold Allen

I'm grateful for my association with cousin Nick. What a great example he has been. I will always appreciate the personal time he took to visit with me whenever our paths would cross. I remember one night after a wonder Priesthood session of conference. We sat outside the chapel and visited for quite a while about family, faith and politics. He was genuinely interested in me and what I had to say. I learned so much about him during those times. My prayers are with his wonderful family during this time of transition.

To the Udall family,

We were saddened to hear about Nick's passing. He was such a great friend to my parents, Joe & Dora Dana. He called regularly while Joe was living here in Utah to check up on him and exchange news on the "latest". One day I drove Joe to downtown SLC to visit Nick and Joan, and we had a good laugh when Nick & Joe both compared their walkers to decide which one was "better equipped"!

Our family has so many good memories of the Udalls. Our prayers go out to all of you.

Love,

Carol Dana Baugh

So many lives were touched by "Mr. Udall" at Jennings, Strouss & Salmon, where he practiced law for so many years. I was fortunate to have worked with him and maintained contacts with him over the years. He was such a hard working man, but always seemed to make time to help those who needed him. We will miss his good humor and bright smile. My condolences to Mrs. Udall and the family.

I've only met Nick a few times but each time I was always impressed and felt welcome in his presence. Nick had a great sense of humor and a great reputation. What a legacy. I feel like I've learned quite a bit more about him too by the things mentioned in his obituary. I'm sorry I'm not able to attend his services today but wanted to pass on my condolences to the family. He will be greatly missed.

Sincerely,

Ted Udall

Our appreciation and esteem for Nick is boundless. We were so blessed by his kind heart and good humor. We were edified by his quick wit, great knowledge and spiritual insights. We are glad and feel so fortunate to have seen him in January 2005. At that time he was as young as ever in mind and spirit even though the body was not. We are certain of his current happiness to be with his dear mother, father and Sybil. Our love to all his family. Thanks to JoAnn for making these years so full of joy.

I will miss my great Uncle Nick. He was my Grandma Ruth's older brother. I remember the fun times I shared with him. We would drive around arizona and he would share stories about my Grandma. He was a wonderful man. He will forever be in my heart. May time speed your healing.

Uncle Nick lived a great life and got to see and do so many things. He always had a story or experience to share with me. I named my first-born after him because he was such a great example of responsibility and integrity. We will miss him but rely on the fact that he is with a host of others who love him as well. Thanks Uncle Nick.

Nick was my mom's (Lorraine Udall Hawkins) first cousin and someone I knew and heard about as I was growing up in Phoenix. I became friends with his twins Larry and Laurie when we were young. I want to send them my condolences. I'd like them to know that I'm thinking of them as well as my aunts and uncles (Nick's first counsins) who thought so highly of him. My thoughts are with you all.

Love,

Patti (Hawkins) Peregrine
