Jose Reynoso Obituary

Reynoso, Jose Luz Mendez MD
Joe passed away on October 4, 2017 at the age of 68. He was a beloved grandfather, father, and brother. As a Family Practice physician he has been an integral part of his Scottsdale community for nearly 4 decades, and during these years his life was interwoven into the fabric of countless families. He was born in Phoenix, AZ on December 13, 1948 to Joe and Velia Reynoso. Growing up in his Mexican community, he was inspired by his childhood doctor, and reported that being a doctor was all he ever wanted to be. Joining the U.S. Army at the age of 19, he served in Vietnam as an officer in the 25th Infantry Unit. After graduating from ASU with a degree in Business, he worked for a while selling real estate and computers. Ultimately, he was able to achieve his dream and was accepted to Creighton University Medical School. He completed his Family Practice Residency at Scottsdale Healthcare, where he forged friendships that would last a lifetime. He worked tirelessly as a community doctor, but always found time on Thursday afternoons for golf. He is survived by his grandchildren Gianna, Eden, Maya, Jonah, Stella, Hunter, and Miles, his sons Javier (Laura), Jason (Elizabeth), and Luke (Heather), his brothers Rey and Bobby, and his sisters Rosie and Rachel. Viewing will be held at 10AM at St. Patrick Catholic Community, 10815 N. 84th St., Scottsdale, AZ 85260 on Thursday October 12, 2017, with service to follow at 11AM. His military burial will be at 1:30PM Thursday October 12, 2017 at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85024. In lieu of flowers we ask that you tell your family you love them. Arrangements entrusted to Messinger Indian School Mortuary.

Can't believe it's been 7 years.Tata was the best grandpa and was always there for us. His wisdom has left a mark and will last in me and my cousins for ever.

It's hard to believe it's been six years since his passing, and yet it seems like yesterday. I have yet to find a compassionate, kind, empathetic physician and diagnostician to fill his shoes. He always listened. He paid attention and made the computer secondary, NEVER primary to the visit. There was nothing I couldn't discuss with him without feeling judged. He was an excellent resident at Osborn garnishing the respect and admiration of the nursing and medical staff. He continued to grow in every aspect of his role as a primary physician. I will always miss him, his skill and his level of compassion that is impossible to find. He always remembered stupid little things and would ask, even if it was months since I last saw him. He cared for me when I was severely sick on many occasions. We both came to learn to look for the "least likely " problem ,or straight at the most obvious, often with me saying "but why?" I knew I was more important than his running out the office door at 4:30p like I experience now. He was a great doctor, but above all, he LOVED his family. He was proud of his children and bragged about their successes. He adored his grandchildren beyond words. He will ALWAYS be missed by all who loved him. No one will ever fill those shoes. He's with God. He did God's work. RIP "Joe". I love you still. I am not alone in that love.

Thank you for being my family Dr. And work colleagues. You were a great Dr. And friend. I wish I could have said goodbye. I should have wrote this after you passed but you know me, I put up walls. I am trying a new thing where I take down the walls . I just want to say I will never forget you. Finally I am saying goodbye my friend. Thank you for everything.

I was stunned to find this obituary. He was the only Dr. I ever had in AZ (I´m 49 now). Having returned to Scottsdale after 11 years in LA, I was hoping he was still practicing but figuring he was enjoying his retirement. He was such a unique individual and hands-down one of the "coolest dudes" I will ever know and a great role model growing up. My condolences to the Reynoso family.

It was by chance I found out about Dr Reynosos passing. He has always been my favorite Dr even though I don't live in Phoenix any longer.
After I moved, I would make special trips back just to
see him. He was one of a kind. A very special man. My blessings to your family.

October 3, 2019

It has been 2 years now since the passing of our favorite Dr. He was more than just a Doctor, he was a family friend. Dr Reynoso was the Dr to 3 generations of my family. When my Grandfather passed away, Reynoso was at the hospital and came and gave his sympathies. Every time I saw Dr Reynoso, we would have lengthy conversations about life before anything else. I was 7 months pregnant the last time I saw him, and we talked in detail about my soon to be daughter. She ended up being born the same exact day he passed away. I will always remember Dr Reynoso and will never find another Dr as caring as he was. He is truly irreplaceable. Rip.

I still go to this office, but I still miss my favorite doctor. One time I asked him for a specialist referral, and he opened with: "I know how you love your Mexican doctor, but ..." and then referred me to his daughter-in-law - a great choice ("but she's not Mexican").

Hard to believe two years have passed since we lost our favorite Doctor. It has been difficult to find a replacement because he cared and knew just what to say and do. Yes the Sandillo family misses him very much and speak of him often. He is actually buried near my husband at the National Cemetery and I go to talk with him. Prayers for the family.

My most sincere condolences to Dr. Reynoso's family. I am very sad to learn of his passing. He was my primary care physician for many years and frankly saw me through some of the toughest parts of my life. I trusted him entirely. He always treated me with amazing respect and kindness. Dr. Reynoso was the kind of person that you wish everyone would be.

He is and will always be incredibly missed, and remembered with much gratitude.

I am deeply saddened by the news of Dr. Reynoso's passing in early October. He was both my late husband's and my primary care doctor for years and represented the finest qualities any medical professional could possess. It grieves me to know he is no longer with us -- but he will remain in our hearts forever. With heartfelt sympathy to his family.

WellI could go on for days about this man. I like so many others had the privilege of being cared for by Dr Joe. I have many stories, and fond memories that I could share but I would run out of the allowed characters. He was my Doctor and friend for over 35 years. He cared for everyone in my family and was a supporter throughout our most difficult times. This is a once in a lifetime guy who just got it. So many Doctors forget the human side of the equation, and lack the human connection. Joe got it! I would do anything to thank him in person. Someday, I'll get that chance. Rest in peace to the best DOC on the planet!

Our sincere condolences to the Reynoso family. Dr. Joe was absolutely the best! We had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Joe when he was making rounds at Scottsdale Osborn. When my husband needed a new GP, he made an appt for a consultation. He told Dr. Joe he was looking for a new doctor and why should he be that man. What followed was the best conversation between a doctor and patient EVER! He got to tell us about himself, his family and his hair! For those who knew him, they will truly understand. We were so fortunate to have him provide care and friendship over the years he cared for my husband. Bless you Dr. Joe.

Our family was so upset to hear of the loss of Dr. Reynoso. He was not only a great doctor but genuinely nice man. My sincerest condolences go out to the Reynoso family. I received a letter of Dr. Joe's passing today and was deeply moved. I met Dr. Joe when he began his practice on Civic Center. We always joked about the day I was referred to him, he was hanging pictures. He said I was one of his first clients. He also became my Dad's doctor as well. Joe was a kind, compassionate person that really cared about you. He was an excellent physician and friend who always took time with me to talk about life, his and mine. I saw him this August and he told me he was going to take a couple months off. I remember we talked that day for an about hour about everything. Joe will truly be missed. May God bless you in your journey.

I am broken hearted to hear of Dr Joe Reynoso's passing. He was the best doctor and a good friend that I have ever had. His charm, wit, wonderful bedside manner, and incredible knowledge are but a few of his greatest qualities. All doctors should have had a chance to take lessons from him, for he was EXCEPTIONAL! I was blessed to have known him for almost 30 years and will miss him greatly.

To his family, I pray that fond memories of Joe fill your hearts will peace and comfort.

Dr. Joe: We just heard about your passing and truly can't believe it as yours is a spirit that never should die. Like so many, we were blessed to have you as our doctor for many years. I always felt listened to and never rushed and that famous Dr. Joe humor! You always took the conservative approach initially which I always appreciated. After 20 years being my Doctor I feel very saddened with this news. Dr. Joe was indeed more a friend I just saw a couple of times a year. During my limited amount of visits I felt I had a healthcare professional who applied his knowledge wisely and focused on the person who you are, resulting in smiles instead of sadness or worries. Talking about our high top shoes and travels were standard topics during my yearly physical and I will miss the smile on his face when he entered the exam room ready with an off-the-cuff remark he obviously was looking forward to make. Joe, you will be missed.

Dr. Reynoso was my physician for almost 20 years. Each time I came into the office he made me feel like his most important patient. We had some great conversations about life. I loved the Christmas card from this last year with all the Grandchildren. He was absolutely glowing with pride and joy in that pic. I cannot express in words how much he will be missed and how much his passing has saddened me. He helped me through the most medically challenging times of my life. I loved this man and miss him already (forced to find a new doctor today ). I'm honored and proud to have known him.

I was heartbroken to learn that this kind, compassionate man had passed away. I was in a very difficult medical situation for a long time, and went from physician to physician without any success. When my parents' previous physician retired, they became patients of Dr. Reynoso and had wonderful things to say about him. Despite my reluctance to see yet another doctor, I made an appointment and was so relieved to find someone who listened and cared that I began crying right in the exam room. I finally felt cared for, and like I wasn't in this alone. I also felt relieved that someone like him was caring for my elderly parents. He had told me that he was taking a leave of absence to get treatment for a long-standing medical issue, but being the modest and self-effacing person he was, he intimated that it was not that serious and that he would be back in December. Even now my calendar says *DR REYNOSO RETURNS* at the top of the December page. If any of his family members should happen to read this, please know that your Jose made a tremendous difference in my life and I am so sorry for your loss of this very special man.

I was one who was lucky enough to have Dr. Reynoso for the past two and a half years. He was the most kind, compassionate, and knowledgeable doctor I've been to in years! We are so sad to hear of Joe's passing and even sadder that we didn't know about his funeral or we would have attended.

We first met him when he was completing his residency at the Piper Center and we were among his first patients when he opened his office at 2nd Street and Civic Center Drive in Scottsdale. He's known our whole family and everyone's history for 39 or 40 years.

When I saw him in August, he told me he'd be
out for three months and would be back in
December unless I saw his name in the paper....

We are sure going to miss you Joe! It's not going to be the same without you. May you rest in peace!!!

I am heartbroken and will miss this man. His passing leaves a tremendous pain in my heart. He wasn't a doctor, he was a friend. He knew everything about my medical history as I began seeing him as a teen in the early 80s. He knew exactly what to prescribe and what to say. He took the time with his patients and truly listened. Many times he shared in confidence his personal life and inner-most feelings with me. He'd smile, I'd smile, despite how bad things might have been in both of our lives.
If it wasn't for him I would probably not be here today. He fought with my insurance company for almost a month to get a biopsy done. My only regret is that I did not get him a copy of a book I am writing about my cancer survival experience. He called me personally to tell me I had cancer and I am forever grateful that he did so. I pray for his family and I know his guiding light will continue to shine upon them.

October 11, 2017

One day, about 35 years ago, Dr. Jack McFarland took us over to meet "the best up and coming young doctor you'll ever meet. He's going to be your new doc. He is going to be at the top of his field some day. He is just great!" We walked into an office with bright orange, shag carpeting, lobby furniture still wrapped in plastic and cartons waiting to be tossed out. Didn't look much like a doctor's office, but we were anxious to meet the "new Doc." The door opened and out came this curly, full - very full - haired individual in an equally bright gold colored medical jacket and bell bottom trousers. The very first words out of his mouth were "Hi! What do you think of my new office?" Since that day, after we got over the initial shock, we - all three of us, my husband, our "beloved Joe" weathered a few decades of illness, surgeries, a lot of "war stories," and all the mental angst of watching our sons grow up. Just as an aside, Joe received the Bronze Star for valor in battle in Vietnam.

In all of the years that we shared as doctor/patients, more importantly friends, we have always known that Joe never sacrificed his loyalty to his profession, his patients and, especially his family. For that we are intensely moved and grateful to have had the privilege and honor to be among the many who were blessed to be in his care. He always pushed against limits to ensure that his patients received the best of care. Maybe, that is because that is the way that Joe handled his limits, without illusion and even though, circumstances might have occasionally gotten the best of him, he always knew that life is short and he worked with such dedication to perfect the best of his place in this small world. We are so lucky to have shared a small space in a big world with him and reaped the benefits of his care. We will miss you, Joe, and we say "good-bye" knowing that you are at peace.

Our deepest condolences to all the Reynoso family for your loss.

Let us all be at peace.

As part of the team that worked with Dr. Reynoso at Honor Health Medical Group Mescal, it was such a shock to hear of his passing. We were all expecting to see him back to work. Some of my co-workers have worked alongside him for years and even decades and then there are the patients who have known him since he started practicing. Dr. Reynoso has left a positive impact on all of us and I am glad that I got to work with him this past year.

I will always remember him as the hip doctor that rocked out to 60's and 70's music in the early morning at the office. Sometimes you could even catch him singing and it would make me smile knowing he was just enjoying life!

Prayers to his family and friends. Your Mescal family misses you every day!

My husband and I are both deeply saddened to hear of the news of the passing of Dr. Joe. We both became his patients only a few years ago, but immediately knew that we had found the very best Dr. that we have ever had. In my life, I have never experienced the level of care that Dr. Joe provided. He truly listened to you as his patient. As his patient, you knew your good health was his primary concern and he really cared. He was funny, sweet, caring and such a positive light in the frustrating health care world. Words can not express how much we will miss him. Someone else described him as their health care angel. I completely agree. The world has lost the very best, caring, intuitive and extremely intelligent physician and person. May God Bless your family as you continue on without him. Our prayers for comfort and peace go out to you all. We will truly miss him.

Dr Joe was the most caring Dr I have ever had. I felt like I was going to see a good friend every time I had an appointment. He knew who the best specialists were and had no hesitation in referring one if he felt it was needed. Several years ago my older Sister became very ill and her Doc would not see her for over a week. I called Joe and he said to bring her in that day. He examined her and immediately had her admitted to Scottsdale Hospital. That action prolonged her life and I will always feel gratitude to Joe for being a fellow human rather than just a cold unattached Dr. I will miss him as my Dr and as a friend who cared.

I was so sad to hear of Dr. Reynosos passing, he was my Dr for 14 years and then I lost the my insurance that he took and had to stop going, he would always come into the room and talk about whatever was happening at the time and then say" Oh did you need to see me for medical reasons" . He took time to make me feel like a person not a patient. He would always ask me the question, Do you know the difference between a career and a job? He said a career is a passion you love to wake up and do everyday, a job is to just get by. He loved what he did and he was good at the compassion side of it. You will leave a void for those who you touched . Blessings to the family and may he be golfing now in the rolling hills of heaven.

Saddened to hear of Joe's passing. He was the greatest caring man, he made house calls to visit my ailing father back in the 1980's, always took time for his patients. One of the best and he will be missed by many, my entire family sends our sympathy to his family. God bless you Dr. Joe.

I was so sad to hear of Dr. Joe's passing. He has been my doctor for 20 some years. He has been a friend for just as long. I saw him monthly for the past couple years, and it was always 20 minutes of visiting, and then 5 minutes of the health stuff! He would refuse to believe I didn't dye my hair! He spoke often of his family, he had a love for life, and he was a very caring man. I can't imagine I will ever find another doctor like him. My condolences to the Reynoso family... I am sure he will be greatly missed. Thank you for sharing him with us all. God bless you.

I worked with Dr. Reynoso oh so many years ago at SHC Osborn. I was a new nurse then. All of the nurses absolutely loved Dr Reynoso. He was so kind and so respectful of us. He took time with his patients, but he also listened to us. He was extremely personable and approachable. My condolences to the family and all those that knew him.

I miss my buddy already. Dr. Reynoso cared for me since I was 8 years old. No words could ever embody what this unforgettable man did for people, not only his patients. His infectious smile, humorous demeanor and love for everyone. Dr. R., - loved by so many and eternally remembered!!

My deepest sympathies, Reynoso family. Dr. Reynoso delivered me back in 1981. He was always the PCP for our family, which is impressive when the family includes a mom who has little faith in doctors and a father who refuses to believe he can fall ill. For over 30 years Dr. Reynoso was the one my parents entrusted to care for all their loved ones. He was incredibly patient, kind, and humble.
Throughout my childhood Dr. Reynoso would share the latest updates on what his sons were up to. His children were his pride and joy and I remember hearing stories about their band, their latest educational accomplishments, and later about their marriages and children.
As I started law school, Dr. Reynoso gave me 10 seconds of celebration followed by a minute of lecture. The lecture was to always remember the humble beginnings. He encouraged me to remember the struggles of my parents and my own and use those memories to serve my community. It was always about serving others and helping where he could, rather than prestige or wealth. He will never be forgotten.

He was a Great Dr. But most importantly a Great man. Ive seen him on a montly basis for about 23yrs. Their were times i was between insurances or between jobs and couldn't afford to keep up with treatment. He would always see me. Wasn't about a copay or paying for a Dr. Visit, he new I needed to be treated and was their for me everytime. I will never forget you and how you helped me though some of the most traumatic and life altering situations. You were always avaible to talk. That was the best medicine sometimes. I'm so sad you are gone, but so glad I was able to have a true Dr. and friend to see me through. My heart and prayers are with his family. Hang in their because if anyone did it Right, he did. XO

Dr. Joe and I were speaking just a few months ago how my son and I were his very first patients. What a privilege to have know him so long.

He saw me through several very serious illnesses and I always called him my medical guardian angel because he kept researching until he found something to help me recover.

Dr. Joe, I miss you already even your teasing me and I always fell for it.

Reynoso family, I am so sorry for your loss of this very special man. He was the best.

Dear Dr. Reynoso's family - we are so sorry for your loss. Dr. Reynoso was my entire family's PCP since we moved to AZ back in the mid-80's. From the first day we met him, it was an instant connection. He gave birth to my children and all of my nieces and nephews. We felt that he was part of the family. Throughout the years we laughed together, we told stories, we cried, we argued, we teased and we went through all the ups and downs of life....we will so miss that friendship. That kind of relationship can never be replaced by another doctor. He was truly one of a kind. Dr. Reynoso lived for his work and it showed with his kind heart and the compassion he had for his patients. May God give you all strength to get you through this tough time. Lean on friends and family for support for there are many people that are there for you. Thank you for sharing your Brother, Father and Grandfather with all his patients. God Bless you.

Those we love remain with us for love itself lives on, and cherished memories never fade because a loved one's gone. Those we love can never be more than a thought apart. For as long there is a memory, they'll live on in our hearts. He was a wonderful man, one I am sure will be remembered with smiles.

Thank you all for posting your kind memorials about my brother Joe. These are truly appreciated by his Son's and brothers and sisters. I miss our weekly check in calls with each other already. They only lasted a minute or two but meant the world to me. You always watched over me and provided me with so much knowledge and laughter. You gave me the privilege of being the Godfather to your first born Javier and you were the Godfather to my first son. I miss you brother but I have a lifetime of memories that I will cherish.

We adored and admired Dr. Joe. He was friendly, humble, kind, generous, witty, a proud Vietnam veteran and a respected physician. He always conveyed how proud he was of his three sons and their respective families. We've been his next door neighbor for the past two years and we miss him dearly. We love you, Dr. Joe.
