Mary Duggan Obituary

Duggan, Mary "Dee" Dolores
71, of Scottsdale, AZ passed away on [Holy Thursday] April 9, 2009 at The University of Miami Hospital in Miami, FL. Born Mary Dolores Hammond in New York City, she resided and was raised by her parents Mary Kate and James Wesley in the upper Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights. At the age of 19, she received a calling to Holy Orders and attended the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus convent. Her life took a different direction and at the age of 23 she married, and had (4) children. In 1978, she relocated and settled in Scottsdale, AZ. In 1981, Dee began an unprecedented career at Scottsdale Community College as an advocate for students with disabilities. In her 25 years of service to SCC students, her greatest rewards were realized when those students received degrees from SCC, and went on to pursue higher forms of education, and there were many. Although she lived over half her life with the pain of rheumatoid arthritis, she dealt with that pain by helping and nurturing others. This disease never compromised her spirit and commitment towards her family, friends, students, and career. Dee's attitude, kindness, and values were reflected in a career ever motivated by her devotion, dedication, and service to thousands of students, faculty, staff, and community friends - often anonymously. She will be missed by all who knew her. Dee was a devoted friend, mother, and beloved grandmother. She is preceded in death by her sister Virginia and brother James Wesley Jr. She is survived by her four children: Liz, Sean (Mary), Jill, Eric (Carrie), eight grandchildren (Taylor, Sean Jr., Shannon, Christopher, Kelly, Nicholas, Eric Jr. and Riley) and her brother, Richard Hammond. A memorial mass will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church (3801 N. Miller Road, Scottsdale) on April 17th at 10:00am followed by a reception at Scottsdale Community College's student center located at 9000 E Chaparral Rd, Scottsdale. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Concerned Citizen for Community Health Paiute International Club care of Vista del Camino Center. 7700 E. Roosevelt Scottsdale, AZ 85257.

Liz, Jill, Sean & Eric

Words cannot express the sadness felt by everyone in the passing of your mother.

Dee was always so willing to help students and friends in any way that she could. When I wanted an honest opinion and good advice, she was the friend I turned to.

I am so sorry that I could not attend the SCC Memorial held in her honor. As you know, Tonya is battling Triple Negative breast cancer. She needed my support from some bad news she had received.

Please be comforted in knowing that Dee is in Heaven, wrapped in God's love and dancing in the streets pain free.

Dee will be remembered by all whose life she touched as a remarkable woman and we were very blessed to have known her.

Thanks to all of you for so willingly letting me join and share in your family gatherings over the years providing me many wonderful memories.

Dee's life should be celebrated. Anyone who gives their life, passion, support and dedication to students deserves the utmost celebration of joy! Dee's work at Scottsdale Community College will be remembered by not only her colleagues but more importantly by the hundreds if not thousands of students she has influenced. I am sure God is greeting her with "Well done, good and faithful servant."

Dolores is my first cousin. I have known her all her life. She was a loving, caring person who would help anybody in need and often put others above herself.

She was a very strong person and faced life's challenges with courage and fortitude; that was her nature.

She was loved by all who came to know her. Dolores and I were more like brother and sister to each other than just first cousins. She was a person very much loved by all who came to know her. Her children were blessed to have had her for a mother.

God bless you Dolores,

Cousin Bobby

Liz, Sean, Jill and Eric,
I was so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. Nothing in the world can prepare you for the loss of a parent and my heartfelt sympathies are with you all. I spoke to your mom a short time after my mom passed away in 2007 and even though we hadn't spoken for many years, it was like the years just disappeared. Your mom was a great lady, which I am sure you don't need to tell you. Just know that now she is able to be everywhere watching over everyone which I am sure she loves. Heaven just gained another angel, and you have a very special guardian angel watching over you all.

Dee was the most precious of friends - the one that would always tell me what I needed to hear, not just what I wanted to hear. Her dedication to family (direct and extended) was remarkable. When speaking about her children she always referred to them as "My Liz", "My Sean", etc. It just was one more way that she showed her intense love for you all. I am so sorry to not be at the memorial service today but it is because of Dee that I am where I am today. She fostered courage I didn't know I had. Her legacy will live on in all of us.

Dee was a wonderful mentor and friend as I jointed the Maricopa College District at SCC. I learned a great deal from her about advocacy and certainly about helping disabled students utilize their abilities to be successful. She taught me that while you accommodate you also don't overcompensate. I don't ever remember seeing her sad or complaining, even when she was in the hospital. She could get "feisty" though and tell you off if her disabled students couldn't get to the bathrooms because you had blocked the path during an event. I spent many lunch hours or over drinks listening to her advice about student and employee issues. I enjoyed those times because they always ended in a laugh and a good time.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Dee's family and all who loved her. She was a wise, courageous, caring woman and she will be sorely missed by many including me.

I'm going to miss Dee in general...but I'm mostly going to miss her smile. It seemed whenever we bumped into each other, on campus or wherever, she was always happy to see me. Over the years I realized she always left me with a good feeling. I wish I could find more people in the world that left me feeling that way. What a beautiful person. I'll miss Dee.

What can anyone say about Dee that isn't always positive. She was dedicated in everything she did. She was amazing with all she had to go thru, all the pain she was in, she always was there for you if you needed help. Her Christmas Angel program at SCC always brought out the best in everyone. When we heard she was moving we were sad. But now that sadness is even more in our hearts because she isn't here! But she is with God and smiling down at us all because she is pain free.

Jill and Family, the pain of losing your mother never goes away. Feel repose in knowing that she no longer suffers and is in the hands of God, surrounded by all her loved ones. She is a prayer and a wish away from all your thoughts. She lives within you all.

I know, because I lost my mom 2 weeks ago. My prayers are with you all.
