Michael Smith Obituary

Smith, Michael Bradley
48, passed away on February 8, 2009. Brad is a native of Mesa and a graduate of Mountain View High School (1979). In 1989, he earned a Bachelor's of Science degree in Political Science from Arizona State University. Brad lived and worked in California for several years as an account executive in the temporary staffing industry. Most recently, Brad worked as a professional in the field of killer bee removal and served as a substitute teacher in the Mesa Public School System. No one enjoyed spending a day, or week or two, at the beach more than Brad. He enjoyed the company and companionship of family and friends, especially when such camaraderie was combined with meals at/from El Charro, homemade Smith tacos, and/or the watching ASU football games, the Phoenix Suns, or the Arizona Cardinals. Brad also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping excursions with his brothers and father in the Arizona deserts and mountains. The family is comforted by many photographs illustrating Brad, always smiling, with either a shotgun or a fishing rod in hand, and not infrequently, with evidence of success. For Brad, the simple pleasures of life, whose expressions were found in and through relationships with friends and family, were the profound pleasures of life. In relationships, Brad found meaningfulness, utility, and joy. Brad is survived by: parents, Charles Wermuth and Carol Calhoun Wermuth; brothers, Kenneth Patrick (Minyon) Smith, Kevin Paul (Candi) Smith, and Gregory Wayne (Mary) Smith; step-brothers and sisters, David Wermuth, Daniel (Lisa) Wermuth, Wendy (William) Udall, Holly (CK) Sato, and Heather Wermuth; nephews, Kenneth Calhoun (Kelly) Smith, Connor Calhoun Smith, Elder Christopher Alexander Smith, and Elder Benjamin Paul Smith; nieces, Brittany Anne Smith, Hanah Jane Smith, Emmeline Smith, Hillary Smith (Jonathan) Darner, Catherine Leigh Smith, and Claire McNally Smith; loving aunts and uncles Wayne Elgin (Kay) Calhoun and Norman Douglas (Carol) Calhoun; and several honorary Smith Brothers of the Citrus Heights Ward. Brad was a devoted son, caring brother, and extraordinary uncle. He is remembered by family and friends as having a compassionate, generous "Hunsaker" heart that was accommodating, accepting, and comforting. Brad possessed a charismatic personality, an understated genuineness, and sense of humor that was more than just a little mischievous. Brad and fun were inseparable. These and other qualities appealed to both people and to discerning dogs. It should be noted, that to be a friend of Brad's, having either a long or a distinguished pedigree, whether for people or for dogs, was not a prerequisite. His family expresses its appreciation to all of Brad's friends for all the tender mercies bestowed upon us at this time and thanks you for your friendship to Brad. Family members would also like to express their appreciation to their Father in Heaven for the blessing Brad has been in this life and for the comfort we take in the belief we are separated from him but for a short time. Until then, as Brad would often conclude his telephone calls, "adios for now".

Dear Carol & Brothers,

I've been so sad to hear about Bradley's passing.

I have some funny letters from Bradley and funny stories ... as if you don't already have so many yourself. I also have some touching poems he wrote as well. I think back to his obsession with building the perfect fishing tackle box when he lived out here (it took on an intensity that was almost disturbing), catching the fish in the stocked pond in Greer and putting our "fish" picture in the local fish & tackle store pretending that we really did catch such a big fish. Maybe our photo is still up in the store. I think they saw through us to be honest. I think of Smith tacos everytime I use the tongs that I had to buy to "properly" make them. I had such a crush on him when he was at BYU for a semester. I couldn't wait for Katy's cousin Bradley to drop by ... we seem to share a real connection on humor. I was delighted when I found out he had moved to Pleasanton. We had so many fun trips to Monterey, driving in that silly car .. was it an eagle embossed transam - bright orange. Rockin' out to Neil Diamond and Jimmy Buffet. I was sadden that he moved back to Mesa but he loved his Mom, family & friends and really couldn't stand the distance. And, even though I never met his Grandma he made it clear how important she had been in his life. Well, and then the brothers...I only hope I can raise my kids to have as much love for family.

Bradley was my first love. Life took us in different directions but I feel we have an eternal connection. For now I will say, til' we meet again my friend.

You have been in my thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,
Mary Alice Lemons

Some of my happiest memories of my childhood were the times I spent with Uncle Sammy, Aunt Carol, Kenny, Kevin, Greg and Bradley. You're in my thoughts and prayers. Much Love

Ma Smith and family:
News travels slow up to this part of the world. I was so sorry to hear of Brad's passing. I don't know if I have even seen him since they broke up the hood (aka split 21st ward), but his grin still says the same things. I can't believe it's been 30 years, and yet your family is still such a part of me and who I am. It's hard to express what it meant to us, to have Kenny and Greg come up to Snowflake for dad's service. I wish I could give some of those feelings back to each of you right now. Know that you are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time, and that the Lord loves you and is mindful of each of you, as are the Russell's.

Carol and family,
I was so sorry to read of Brad's death and want to express my love and sympathy to all of you. It meant so much to me to have your boys come to Ralph's funeral and I wish I could come and give you a big hug and tell you how much you are loved. My prayers are with you. It will be a hard, sad time. Just remember how many people love you and your special family.

Aunt Corkie

Words cannot express the emotions I feel right now. You have an extrodinary immediate family, as you should have. I hadn't seen Brad for a very long time, but his photo with his trademark smile is all one needs to recognize and remember. I wish there was a way for me to ease your pain and your loss. If I could shoulder all of it for you, I would.
Just remember this. I love you!!

Perfect description of a good friend. We will miss running into him at El Charro - hopefully the Lord will have a green chili burro waiting for all of us. We are thinking of you and your family!

My deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Michael he was so young to go but Heavenly Father needed him. Its been a long time but I do remember him from school we are the same age but haven't seen him since. But graduated the same year. Time flew by but his smile is still the same. I am glad he had such wonderful people in his life and I am so sorry for your loss....God Bless..
