I work at Village Inn and was his waitress and hadn't seen Randy in a while. He gave me a card with a prayer along with his name. I decided to look him up and let him know we miss him. I'm heartbroken and pray his wife is well.

My best memory of Randy was many years ago when we were in Paul White's Sunday School Class at Arizona Community Church. Randy made the welcome and announcements and I noticed he had a Southern accent. I asked him where he was from and he said "I'm from Virginia." I said I was Virginian also and asked him where he lived. He said he graduated from Christiansburg High school. I told him I graduated from Pulaski High School the same year. We only lived about 25 or 30 miles apart, our schools played against each other in sports, and Randy and I did not meet until many years later in Tempe, Arizona. We always kept in contact about our favorite team, Virginia Tech. Randy was a wonderful friend, and I especially loved my birthday songs he sang to me. They were so special.

Hi, John. It's Eddie Kane from the Gardens. I want to extend my deepest condolences to you and your family upon the passing away of your father. Though I can't imagine what you are going through, I hope you can find some sort of solace in the memories that you all have shared together. Also, I wanted to apologize to you regarding some of the ways/issues that were presented to you that may have been insensitive. If there is anything I can do at all, please let me know. I am truly sorry for your loss.

May your faith be a source of strength during this time of loss. We extend our most profound condolences on the loss of a beloved husband, father, and friend. No words can express our grief, and no actions can make Randy's passing easier to accept. Randy's innocence and benevolence towards all shall live forever in the hearts and minds of everyone who had the blessing of knowing him. We shall cherish many fond memories of him. May Randy's soul rest in peace, and may God empower you with fortitude and comfort during such times of insurmountable sorrow. Love, Fariba and Sahba (true friends who visited and assisted Ellen and John most tenderly on Saturday, January 7 and escorted Ellen to, at, and from the service on Saturday, January 14; truly virtuous and present when most needed)

Dearest Randy,
A special lady whom I go to church with, named Susan VanWormer, sang a special song to me. The song was so touching and thoughtful that it brought me to tears! I learned a few days ago that this dear song was a song of blessing that you sang to many when you knew it was their birthday. Although you and I have never met, I wanted to let you know that you are surely not forgotten. Your special song still carries on as a joy to others, and I am thankful for the things you have lovingly given to others to share (such as this wonderful birthday song).
So today is your birthday
That is what I've been told.
What a wonderful birthday,
You're one more year old.
On your cake there'll be candles
And God's blessing, too,
And the angels are singing
Happy Birthday to you.
(Then the traditional birthday song and lyrics)
I'd also like to wish you a Happy Belated Birthday. Please know that there are many people who love you, are thinking of you, and praying for you! Sincerely,
Jackie Lucas Shelton

My nephew Randy was always so cheerful, positive, and "looking up." He never failed to call me on my birthday until July 27, 2016. Then I knew something was terribly wrong. I shall miss his birthday songs and his up-beat personality. I remember him as a teenager coming to visit us on the farm (during his summer off from school) and how Mother would always make him a "sweet potato pudding," which he loved. After he graduated from Blacksburg High School, we didn't see much of him. However, in June 1960, Bob and I took a trip to Phoenix to visit him. And several time he would come back to Christiansburg, Virginia to visit his Dad and Mom, Randolph and Evia Lucas, and would usually stop by to see us. It was always a pleasure to have him and Ellen. On one such occasion, John and his family came, and we had a family picnic on the creek. I have wonderful memories of Randy and will miss him greatly. Jackie Lucas Shelton (Aunt Jackie to Randy)

Randy is safe with the wonderful Lord he loved and honored and served with all his heart as long as I've known him. There is no doubt how much Randy loved Him and kept "looking up." I'll always remember him "Praising the Lord." I'm so sorry he went at an early age, but GOD is not unjust. He had it all planned-we trust Him-His timing is always perfect. Even tho' we miss him, Randy is at peace. I can see him singing and smiling that wonderful smile of his! -- Jane Lee (Ellen's dear friend and most faithful letter-writer since the 1970s)

The passing of your Dad is a great loss for me, too; I'm so sad and sorry about this loss. Your Dad was such an angel; and while his body is now resting in peace, his beautiful soul and memories remain alive in the hearts and thoughts of people who know and love him, people who lives were touched by his kindness and thoughtfulness. Hey John, sorry to hear of your Dad's passing, but he can finally be at peace now. Knowing he's at the side of God...he will rejoice...he was lucky to have you as a son... You...someone who tends to try and project they don't care for anyone was there for him at his bedside during his toughest hours...he knew your love for him even if you try to not let such feelings be known...hence why I call you a friend/family, and we have a place in our hearts for you. Please let us know of his service times and dates so we may celebrate his life with you...we are here for you through this difficult time.

I know you did all you could for him to make his passage comfortable; and, while he was on this earth, you let him know through your actions and words how much you loved him. He was blessed to have a son like you, just as you were blessed to have him as your Dad. Randy was such a special person, always so upbeat and loving. He made everyone around him feel happy just being in the same room with him. He will be missed. My prayers are with you and Aunt Ellen.

Randy's quick wit, contagious laughter, and enthusiasm for reaching the unsaved for Christ were always evident in his life. During his earthly walk, he "acted justly, loved mercy, and walked humbly with his God." (Micah 6:8) He reflected his God in attitude and actions.

I have only known Randy for four years, but what a blessing. He added my name to his list for people to call on their birthday. His birthday song and his comments and prayer afterward were a delight and blessing. On several occasions Dee and I had the privilege of having dinner with Randy and his lovely wife Ellen. A blessed time of fellowship. Randy is now in Heaven with God and Jesus, his Savior and Lord. We will miss him very much but will see him again someday. Randy was truly a unique, special man whose main goal in life was to serve his Lord and Savior. This he did in so many ways. He held a tremendous place in our hearts and we can praise God that He allowed Randy to cross our paths so many years ago. He was dearly loved. His annual birthday phone calls will be greatly missed but, even more so, his cheerful attitude and smiling face. We rejoice that he is with Jesus and that we will be reunited with him someday.

I remember Randy sharing that when they went out to eat he would ask the waiter/waitress if they had a special need he could pray for, and then share the written word expressing hope in a relationship with Jesus Christ. On the back would be his name and phone number in case they wanted to talk further. He was One of a Kind and I can just see the twinkle in his eye as he enters Heaven!

What a blessing it is to have known Randy and to know that he is forever a part of our eternal family! He is "home" and one day we will join him forever. I know he is singing as he has never sung before and rejoicing in perfect peace, joy and love.
Shall deeply miss his warm smile and gracious manner in the days that follow, but knowing he is with our Lord brings the greatest of comfort and peace.
May God give you, Ellen and John, His peace, love and comfort at this time.
