Raymond Huger Obituary

Raymond A. Huger, M.D., a retired psychiatrist who spent over 50 years
in practice at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, died on February 17 at the age of 90. He was a founder of The Huger Mercy Living Center, a residential facility for persons with Alzheimer's disease, in which he collaborated with Karmen Dopslaff. Dr. Huger was born in St.
Louis, Missouri. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees at St. Louis University. On June 19, 1943 he was married to Frances Moynihan of St. Louis. They were very happily married until her death in 1997. He served as a physician in the United States Army during World War II. He was stationed in North Africa and was a part of the Allied assault on Anzio beach in 1944. In addition to attending to his fellow soldiers he delivered several babies in nearby towns. Later in life he enjoyed pointing out that one such child had been given the name, Raymondo. After his discharge from the Army he served Wright City, Missouri as the only doctor. In 1949 Dr. and Mrs. Huger moved to Phoenix where he initially practiced surgery. In the mid 1960's he took a residency in psychiatry in San Francisco and returned to Phoenix as a board certified psychiatrist with a special interest in chronic pain. Having been educated in the Jesuit tradition he lived his life truly as "a man for others." He had a special love for his nephew, the late John Diestelkamp of St. Louis. He is survived by friends: Karmen and Ulli Dopslaff, Don and Midge Heiple and Yvonne Villalanti, Joe and Rick Miller, his nieces and nephews: Ellen Lindeman, Barbara Kuchar, Bernard Huger, Gregory Huger, Raymond Huger, Catherine Dussmann, Mary Noone and Cynthia Grunik, and by his great nieces and nephews and his late wife's nieces and nephews: Mia Cobb, Suzie Payne, Judy Schnitzmeier, Annmarie Hurt, Liz Perkins, Neil Moynihan, Michael Moynihan, and Dave Moynihan.
