Robert Garelick Obituary

Robert GarelIck, 94, of Phoenix, Arizona passed away on August 23, 2008. Robert "Bob" Garelick passed away on August 23, 2008 at the age of 94. He was born on June 6, 1914 in Belarus to Abraham and Mary Garelick. He served his country proudly in the Navy during World War II. Then, for over 30 years, Robert was an art dealer who established the first major art gallery in Detroit and showed major U.S. and European artists as well as locals--many of whom were just starting out. He owned art galleries in Detroit, Michigan and Scottsdale, Arizona. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 68 years, Helen Garelick, his children Alice Rosen of Gaithersburg, MD, David Garelick of Santa Rosa, CA and Barry Garelick and wife Ginny of McLean, VA; his niece, Terry Small; his grandchildren Adam, Robin, Michael and Angela; and his great grandchildren Ellen and Avi. His family, friends and colleagues will miss his poignant and humanitarian observations of the world and his wise advice. A celebration of life gathering will be scheduled at a later date.

Bob Garelick was my grandfather, and often a larger than life presence. I knew him as a strong, determined man with a history of proud accomplishments and a pragmatic view of world events. We shared a bond and a political outlook. His later years were challenging, but he is now at peace, and we will all remember the strength, courage and wisdom he displayed over his long lifetime.

THE WATCH
This sailor has stood the watch
While some of us were in our bunks at night
This sailor stood the watch
While some of us were in school learning our trade
This shipmate stood the watch
Yes, even before some of us were born in this world
This shipmate stood the watch

In those years when the storm clouds of war were seen
This shipmate stood the watch
Many times he would cast an eye ashore and see
his family standing there
Needing his guidance and help
Needing that hand to hold during those hard times
But he still stood the watch
He stood the watch for many years
He stood the watch so that we, our families and
Our fellow countrymen could sleep soundly in
safety, each and every night
Knowing that a sailor stood the watch
Today we are here to say
"Shipmate...the watch stands relieved
Relieved by those you have trained, guided and lead
Shipmate - you stand relieved...we have the watch"
"Boatswain - Standby to pipe the side
Shipmate Going Ashore"

Thank you for your service to this nation.
