Shirley Clementz Obituary

Clementz, Shirley Lois
Shirley Clementz passed away peacefully at Glencroft, in Glendale, AZ a place she had called home for the past 10 years on January 4, 2011. She was 88. Born in Springfield, Illinois, to Dewey and Blanche Wetzel, she lived most of her early life in the Midwest, moving, with her Mother and Sister, Joyce, as their father pursued new sales opportunities with GM. She graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1940 and spent a year each at Moorhead State Teacher's College, Moorhead, Minnesota, and Illinois State Normal University, Normal, Illinois. Her first job was with the Navy Department in Cleveland, Ohio, where she met Bill, who would be her husband for 56 years. The greater Cleveland area was their home for 15 years, they had two boys and Shirley was a Secretary for several Companies. She always received strong appraisals for her industrious and hard working nature and her ability to learn fast. Although she had moved 17 times during her life up to that point, she says the "granddaddy of them all" was the move to Phoenix in 1960. It was Bill's debilitating Multiple Sclerosis that prompted the move but both of them would experience a better quality of life in the Valley of the Sun. Shirley continued to work as a Secretary first at Southwest Surgical Supply then at Arizona Bank. During this period she became very active in the Professional Secretary's Association, became a Certified Professional Secretary, held various offices, and eventually became President of the Valley of the Sun Chapter of PSI. She was very proud of her advancement in this craft and was proud of the term "Secretary". She later went on to become a registered parliamentarian and after her retirement from the Bank, which had become B of A, she traveled around serving as a Parliamentary Advisor to large conventions of professionals. Upon Bill's death in 2001, she moved into Glencroft, where Bill had lived the last 2 years of his life. She loved the people and the ambiance of Glencroft and served on their Board for a few years and was active in the church. Shirley is survived by her two sons, David and Mark, her 2 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She touched all of their lives at different levels and will be missed but not forgotten. A memorial service will be held, Thursday, January 13, 2011 at 6:00 pm at Phoenix Memorial Park and Mortuary, 200 W Beardsley Rd., Phoenix, AZ. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made in Shirley's name to Friendship Foundation at Glencroft, 8611 N 67th Avenue, Glendale, AZ 85302.

When I joined The Arizona Bank in 1975 as a young Trust Officer, I "inherited" Shirley as my secretary. She was very helpful to me in learning about all of the trust clients I had become responsible for.

Shirley had excellent secretarial skills and was very reliable. After a couple of years she moved on to a higher level position within the bank - but, I was grateful that she had helped me as I started my career there.

Shirley, was a close family friend of mine and she brought so many smiles in my life and tought me that no matter what im capable of anything. i have to say that i was very blessed to have known her. i know that She flew up to Heaven on the wings of angels
By the clouds and stars and passed where no one sees
And she walks with Jesus and her loved ones waiting
And I know she's smiling saying
Don't worry 'bout me
Thank you for everything Shirley!!!

Shirley was a professional colleague and long-time friend. We worked together, traveled together, laughed & cried together while members of Valley of the Sun Chapter, NSA/PSI/IAAP. I dug out my scrapbook and chuckled over a photo of the time she let us wrap her up in tinfoil (playing the part of a robot) in a skit we were doing. I hadn't seen her in quite a while, just keeping in touch with the annual Christmas card, but always knew she was only 40 miles away. Her passing has left a vacuum in the universe. My thoughts and prayers are with all who knew and loved her.
