John Orr Obituary
March 20, 1953 - May 29, 2025
John Edward Orr was born on March 20, 1953, in Chicago, Illinois. When he was a toddler, his family moved to Tucson, Arizona. In 1982, he met the love of his life, Heather Ward, and together they relocated to Flagstaff, where John pursued a degree in Education at Northern Arizona University.
Following his graduation, John dedicated his entire career to the Flagstaff Unified School District. At Coconino High School, he taught physical education, weight training, auto shop, and industrial education, and spent many years coaching baseball before transitioning to coach girls' softball. Later, he became the beloved PE teacher at Sechrist Elementary, a role he held until his retirement in 2017. He was affectionately known for greeting each school day with classic rock playing as parents dropped off their childrenjust one example of the joy and energy he brought to his work.
John passed away in May 2025 after a battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Heather; their children, Holly and Rob; and three grandchildren who he loved immeasurably.
He will be remembered for his wit, warmth, and unmistakable love of life. His presence will be deeply missed.

Mr. Orr was one teacher that always stands out as a guide. I think about his small engine repair class and beginning automotives. I was just thinking about him this weekend detailing a truck, using his trick of a newspaper instead of paper towels. He will be missed!

Heather and family,
It was such a pleasure to have had John as a friend, co-worker, and fellow Chicagoan. John was a humble man who each and everyday put forth his best efforts helping others. He was a well respected educator who had the abilities to teach at different grade levels and different classes (even the kindergarteners). We enjoyed our time with John and have fond memories.

I was lucky enough to be one of the Sechrist teachers who worked with John. My students adored him! He was always quick with a smile and positive comment for staff and students alike. He was a blessing to all of us.
