Luther Flick

Luther Flick was born in Glendora, California on July 31, 1923 and passed away in Flagstaff, Arizona on May 8, 2015.  He grew up in small farm house in south Phoenix, where he learned hard work during the Depression years in the hot and mostly agricultural world of the Phoenix valley.  He served in the US Navy for 6 years from 1942 to 1948, and lived through war against the Japanese up close and personal at many of the famous island battles in the Pacific.  Five days after he left the Navy, he married June Heiden on September 5, 1948.  They enjoyed 66 years of marriage and had four children, two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.  He attended ASU on the GI bill, graduated with a degree in education, and nearly finished his doctoral degree until life and family took precedent.  He spent his entire working career in public education:  teacher at Loloma Elementary in Scottsdale, principal at Supai and Hohokam elementary schools in Scottsdale, superintendent in Sierra Vista from 1966-1976, and superintendent in Holbrook from 1976 until retirement.  Luther and June moved to Flagstaff in 1987, where they enjoyed their retirement for 28 years.  He enjoyed reading, fishing, his visits to the gym, and sitting on their deck surrounded by towering pines and watching deer and elk wander through the yard.  He enjoyed volunteering at the Museum of Northern Arizona and Flagstaff Medical Center, and enjoyed the company of others at the Rotary Club and his men's bible study.  All who knew him will miss their dad, husband, uncle, grandpa, friend, teacher, boss, mentor, and much more.  He is survived by his wife June, and three children Martin (Judith), Loren (Christy), and Marcene.  He was preceded in death by his daughter Karen and his brother Tom.  A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, July 11 at the church they have attended for 28 years, Trinity Heights United Methodist Church in Flagstaff.  In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the church, the Museum of Northern Arizona, or Habitat for Humanity.  Memories and condolences can be shared with his family at www.norvelowensmortuary.com
