ALFRED "FRED" JOHN CASTRO
1921 -2018
Alfred John Castro was born August 9, 1921 in Bakersfield, CA to Charles and Angela Castro. Known as Fred or Freddy to those who knew him, he died at 5:25 PM, February 9, 2018, at his home at The Village at Seven Oaks.
Fred was a member of the Greatest Generation, proudly serving in the United States Army in the Philippines during WWII. He returned home and enjoyed long careers with Southern Pacific Railroad and Kern County General Services. As part of the pioneering Kern County Castro family, Fred left an indelible mark on those around him with his quick wit, fast smile, gentlemanly nature and his well-documented love for dining out. He spent a great deal of time joking around and teasing the wonderful staffs at John's Burgers on River Boulevard, Hometown Buffet on White Lane, Westchester Lanes, Molly J's, Rice Bowl, and his beloved Cindy's Restaurant. At the time of his passing, Fred was the longest standing member of the Bakersfield Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Fred loved to drive, and as he entered his 90's his penchant for driving a little too fast did not wane. He enjoyed driving to far reaches of Kern County to watch trains, or to simply enjoy the ride. Fred was also a "collector". While model trains were a passion, he also "collected" 5-gallon buckets, bottle cap tops, screws, quirky wooden figurines, and practical items like tools.
Upon taking up residence at The Village at Seven Oaks, Fred carried on his antics of harmlessly harassing employees, telling jokes, and charming everyone he met. He spent two years living at the Village, and he will be missed by the staff and residents.
Fred is predeceased by his parents, ten siblings, long-time companion Virginia Pruitt, and numerous other family and friends. Fred is survived by his little sister, Virginia Rodriguez of Bakersfield, several nieces and nephews, and many, many dear friends he made on his journey.
The family would like to thank the amazing staff at The Village at Seven Oaks for their care and love for Fred, Dr. Don Tran of Bakersfield Family Medical Center for his compassionate treatment, and Hoffman Hospice for the outstanding comfort provided in his final days.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday February 14 at Bakersfield National Cemetery.
