Blas Garcia Obituary

Bakersfield Blas Garcia Jr. passed away in the early hours of June 15, 2023, at the Ronald Reagan Medical Center at U.C.L.A. in Los Angeles. He went in for a heart procedure. During the surgery his heart stopped, and the Doctors opened him up to see if they could save him. After receiving numerous blood transfusions Blas flat-lined and was put on life support. His brothers Henry and Philip, his sister Rose Mary along with his long-time girlfriend Jessica Perez were at his bedside and said their goodbyes.
Blas attended Our Lady of Guadalupe, Garces Memorial and Bakersfield College. He joined the army in hopes of going to France to reunite with Tina Kuyle who had been a Foreign Exchange Student at Garces Memorial.
Instead, he was sent to Hawaii and then to Viet Nam. He served as a Combat Medic with the 11th Infantry Brigade 23rd INF.DIV. AMERICAL from 1967 through 1968. He was a proud recipient of the Purple Heart Medal.
He was the owner of La Tapatia on N. Chester Ave for many years, where he made many friends. Until his health started to decline, he loved golfing, the casinos and spending time with friends. He looked forward to going to breakfast every Sunday morning with his brothers, Philip, and Henry. They all looked forward to this time together. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. Blas never married.
Blas was preceded in death by his mother Alexandria Cornejo Garcia Perez, his father Blas Garcia Sr., his stepfather Carlos Perez, and his brother David Garcia.
He is survived by his siblings, Juanita Coughran (Bill), Henry Joseph (Hannie), Philip (Glenda), Rose Mary Lomas Garcia, Charlie Perez, sister-in-law Dolores Garcia, and Tina Hinojos. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and his girlfriend Jessica Perez.
He will be laid to rest at the Bakersfield National Cemetery. Those who wish to attend may do so. The interment will be on Thursday, July 13th at 10:45 AM.

I have great memories of Blas at the La Tapatia. He would come over to your table with a smile on his face and ask how your meal was. It was always great. My prayers go to the family. I know he will be missed.
