Carl Benjamin Obituary

Carl Benjamin
January 22, 1938 - April 10, 2018

Carl Benjamin was born in Panama to Cecil and Vestina Benjamin on January 22nd, 1938, the eldest of 5 children. He grew up in Panama, and came to the United States on a tennis scholarship to Central State University in Ohio in 1958. He graduated with a degree in mathematics, then earned his Master's Degree from Syracuse University in New York. A position at Bakersfield High School brought the family to California. Carl then taught mathematics at Bakersfield Junior College for over 40 years; he achieved Professor Emeritus status. After retiring, the couple moved to Oxnard, California.

Having a strong sense of morality, work ethic and excellence, Carl was dedicated to every endeavor and became accomplished in tennis, ping pong, bowling, and chess despite being legally blind in one eye from childhood. He was a man of few words, but very generous and strong in his Christian faith.

Carl is survived by his wife of 53 years, Claudette (Soley) Benjamin, and his 2 daughters, Vonnie Benjamin-Brown (and husband Kenny) and Cami Schermerhorn (and husband Aaron).

He went to be with the Lord on April 10th, 2018.

Services will be held on Friday, April 20th at noon at Conejo Mountain Funeral Home, 2052 Howard Rd., Camarillo, CA.

Wow I'm so sorry to hear this. Mr Benjamin was my Math Professor at Bakersfield College. Keeping the family in prayer. I wanted to thank him for investing love in me while I attended BC. We had some great conversations. Many life nuggets that have blessed me. Rest in Glory Mr Benjamin

Was looking for my all time favorite math teacher to tell him what a difference he made in my higher education. Unfortunately, I found he had passed to be with our lord before I could tell him so. So privileged to have known him and look forward to telling so someday. My thoughts are with you all as he was a giant of a man.

My heartfelt sympathy go out to you during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring. JL

I was so sorry to hear about the death of Mr. Benjamin. I had him for math in 1980 at BC and he was an excellent professor. I had gone back to college in my late 20's so was a little fearful, but he helped me with my self confidence and to succeed in his class. He was my all time favorite math teacher. My prayers are with you during this difficult time. Peace & comfort to each of you.

Thank you, Professor Benjamin, for not just encouraging me to understand Math and it's relationships, but to LOVE MATH! Your legacy left a mark on my teaching of Math, and I hope that I have inspired my students the way you inspired me those many years ago at Bakersfield College.
