Cecil Eugene "Gene" VanHorn

On April 9th, the morning of Palm Sunday, Gene Van Horn left the confines of this world to be with his Savior and be reunited with his beloved wife, Mary Frances.
Gene, born November 13, 1923, in Chino, CA had lived in Bakersfield since the age of two. He attended Panama Union School and graduated from Kern County Union High School in 1941. Ten years later Gene married the love of his life, Mary Frances Hughes. They had 56 wonderful years together before her death in 2007. Gene worked in agriculture for the majority of his life. In 1981, on the recommendation of the Kern County Hay Association, he was invited to New Zealand to introduce hay cubing to their farmers as a way of improving the hay quality. Gene and Mary Frances enjoyed traveling all over New Zealand during their stay. They also loved trips to Pismo Beach and cruising. Among Gene's favorite activities as a young adult was roller skating, and he was always an avid Dodgers and USC fan.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Erma Van Horn; sister, Dorcas Costerisan; and brothers, Leonard Van Horn and Duane Van Horn. He is survived by his children, Linda and her husband, Dale Cain, Randall Eugene Van Horn, Darrell Wayne Van Horn; brother, Richard Van Horn and wife Elsie; five grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Gene's family would like to extend special thanks to caregivers Phyllis Loveless and Kristi Commings from Around the Clock for the wonderful love, care and compassion they showed Gene and the entire family.
Graveside services will be held at Greenlawn Southwest Memorial Park on Thursday, April 13, 2017, at 2:00 pm.
Donations in Gene's memory may be made to the Mission at Kern County, or the Shriner's Hospital for Children.
