Daniel Shugart Obituary

DANIEL THOMAS SHUGART (BOONE)

April 30, 1955 – April 30, 2025

Daniel Thomas Shugart (Boone) passed peacefully in his sleep April 30th, 2025 after celebrating his 70th birthday surrounded by his family and friends. He was born on April 30th, 1955 in Bakersfield, California to Joan and Glenn Shugart. Dan graduated from North High School in 1974. He married the love of his live, Melonie, on April 27, 1985. Melonie and Dan spent every waking minute together with friends and family at the horse stables, at the races, playing card games and traveling. Dan had an incredible work ethic and worked so hard to provide for his family, Dan retired from the Kern county parks and recreation department in 2022 to care for his beloved wife until her passing in 2023. He then lived the rest of his retirement meeting new friends, spending time with old friends, traveling with his daughter and son-in-law, loving on his grandson and dancing until his heart was full.

He was one of the biggest hearted people anyone knew who would give you his last dime and shirt off his back if you needed it. You could always catch him on the dance floor, cracking a ridiculous joke, lending a hand or handing out his famous cobbler. Dan spent most of his time helping his daughter, Jaycee, achieve her life goals. Whether that be softball, showing livestock, or veterinary school he was always there cheering her on. His biggest passion was helping 4-H members excel in their projects, helping everyone at the Kern County Fair, and cooking BBQ for the Pyles Boys Camp. In February 2025, Dan gained his most proud title, Grandpa, to Hunter Boone Long. He was the best grandpa Hunter could have ever asked for.

Dan is preceded in death by his wife Melonie; sister, Crystal; mother, Joan; and father, Glenn. He is survived by his children, Jaycee (husband Clayton), Aaron (wife Amy), and Barton; grandson, Hunter Boone; bonus granddaughters Hayley and Luna; brothers , Tim, Steve, and Craig (wife Abbe); nieces, Trina, Holley, and Darcie; great niece, Kylie; great nephew, Keegan; as well as countless friends that were more family than friends, Ronnie, Rebecca, Mardee and Tom, just to name a few.

Dan will be incredibly missed by so many but he would want everyone to celebrate the life he lived and continue to tell his memories so his grandson can grow up knowing Grandpa Boone was the best.

A potluck style celebration of life will be held on May 15th at 1pm:

Branded heart fellowship (Cowboy Church)

5320 Peacock Park Lane

Bakersfield, CA 93308

In lieu of flowers, Jaycee requests donations be made to Calloway 4-H through the Kern County 4-H extension office at (661) 868-6200

Dadgummit! I just saw Dan at my brother's memorial service at the Kern County Fairgrounds. Matt was very fond of Dan. They're probably having a good time swapping stories and making each other laugh.

I met Dan in 1983 under tough circumstances. He made that place a lot more bearable with his good natured presence.
