Darrel McFarland Obituary

Gene was born March 17th, 1941 in Sand Springs, Oklahoma where he lived until graduating from High School. He moved to Bakersfield in 1959 and began his career in the title business. That path ultimately led to a 10 year adventure throughout the country as a Petroleum Landman, securing oil and gas leases for leading corporations within the industry. In 1983 he returned to Bakersfield, and in early 2005, he and Melissa moved up to Lake Isabella; as he had longed to live away for many years where he could spend his free time hunting, fishing, and being surrounded by the river, lake and mountains he so dearly loved. He left us in the early morning hours of Sunday April 9th, as the sunlight began filling the house, surrounded by his wife and family. As the fishing derby at the lake, had already begun, on one of the most beautiful days in recent weeks, you could almost imagine him saying, "if they ask where I've gone, tell them I'm fishin'".... He is gone from our sight, but never from our hearts..... All that know him, know of whom he leaves behind, to watch over..and as he did in life, now he does from heaven. Gene was one of my best friends, I met him in 1968, the first day I went to work for 1st American. He was one of the most humorous people I ever knew, and had the most unusual sense of analogy, life was never dull. Away from fishing/hunting/4 wheeling, he enjoyed nothing better than having his family and friends around him. He had so many little funny phrases that were so unique to Gene and he was so quick to laugh. I will be so glad when the pain of his passing is replaced by the memories of his quick wit, humor and hearty laugh. He was a great Dad to my 4 kids, he was also a real friend, there were no pretenses to Gene. There are so many stories that would make you laugh because they are so funny, and cry because he won't be making anymore of those stories on this side of heaven. I'll bet he's going to have a million new ones when we see him next.

To the family you have my condolences. Gene is no longer suffering but with God now. He touched many peoples hearts and was the kindest man I knew. May he be fishing in heaven.

God Bless
