DEANNA MCCAULEY
February 24, 1937 - May 6, 2021
Deanna was born in Bakersfield to Vincent and Gina Maraccini on February 24, 1937, the second of three daughters. She attended St. Francis School and graduated from Garces Memorial High School in 1955. While there, she was a song leader, homecoming queen, and was involved in writing the Garces alma mater, which is still sung today. She received her BS degree from Mount St. Mary's College and began a career in the medical technology field. She married John McCauley and together they raised four children, who were always the delight of Deanna's life, along with her six grandchildren. In 1973, Deanna changed careers and became a science teacher at Garces, where she remained until her retirement in 2003. She loved generating curriculum to meet the students' needs and was involved in developing the science curriculum while serving as department chair. She taught AP Biology for many years. Deanna was honored for her many years of service when she was inducted into the Garces Hall of Honor in 2009. After her retirement, she volunteered as a tutor at the Mercy Learning Center and served lunch to the homeless at the St. Vincent de Paul Center. Over the years, she participated in several different Bible studies.
She passed from this life on May 6, after a short bout with pancreatic cancer. She was surrounded by her four loving children the last four weeks of her life and enjoyed their teasing of one another and their laughter.
Deanna is survived by her four children: John, Christopher, Patrick (Lisa) and Kelli (Jason), as well as six grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters Gloria de Censo and Paula Evans.

I just learned today of Deanna's passing. I gooogled her to see if she was still with us.
I was teaching Biology at Garces when Deanna joined the department and brought such a wealth of knowledge and experience to the department and school. In particular I remember her laughter and infectious personality. What a gift she was for all of us who knew her and had the privilege to work beside her.

We were married the same summer as John and Deanna. Tom had gone to Loyola High School with John. We became couple friends at U.S.F. Our daughter Bridgett and John Vincent were born within 2 weeks of each other. We shared many fun and memorable times together. Deanna was a kind caring and dedicated person. Our sympathies to John Vincent Patrick Christopher Kelli Ann Gloria and Paula

I worked with Deanna in the Science Dept. at Garces Memorial High School. On some days when I entered my classroom in the morning I'd find a cookie waiting for me on my desk - Deanna had placed it there to start my day on a happy note and keep my spirits up. Deanna was a kind and thoughtful person, and I will miss her.

I graduated from Garces in 1999 and Mrs. McCauley was one of my favorite teachers - she taught my honors biology and AP biology courses. I was fortunate to be able to keep in touch with her through the years and always looked forward to her letters! I will miss her! For her family... may your memories of her bring you peace.
