Douglas Sharratt Obituary

Douglas John Sharratt 1958 - 2008 Kind, generous, loyal, devoted, husband, father, friend, entrepreneur, these are only a few of the great attributes for which Douglas John Sharratt will be forever remembered. Doug was abruptly taken from us on July 16, 2008, only three weeks after celebrating his 50th birthday. Seldom, if at all, did he talk about himself. He had a tremendous humble spirit and truly thrived on life. His firm handshakes, tight hugs, bright eyes and infectious smile were only a symbol of Doug's affection for life and respect he had for others. He always put others first. No matter what the situation, Doug knew exactly what to do and say - if only he were here today he would help us all. Although this is a time of great sadness it's also a time to celebrate the phenomenal life he led. He adored his wife and his six children. He loved the laughter of his family, cherished conversing with dear friends, and treasured every moment he spent with his wife. He enjoyed good food; fine wine, Pete's Coffee and had a passion for flying. Doug had also become environmentally conscious and took great pride in recycling and going green. Doug was an avid student of life, with an insatiable appetite for knowledge and a zest for challenge. He had an extraordinary intellect, a terrific sense of humor and a propensity for seeing good in all whom he met. He earned the admiration of each individual that had the good fortune to know him. His family and friends speak with a voice of gratitude and appreciation for the wisdom, kindness, and love that Doug generously shared.  Doug was born on June 23, 1958 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He carried with him a remarkable entrepreneurial spirit and a strong work ethic. Doug began his first company, Processes Unlimited, as a one-man operation in his garage in 1985. After the success and sale of that company, he started ProSoft Technology in 1990. With endless motivation and tremendous innovation, Doug grew the company into a firm employing more than 100 employees and fifteen offices operating in five countries all around the world. Doug was a pioneer in the field of automation and his professional accomplishments made him an icon in the industry, but it was his humble and genuine spirit that made him a beloved leader and cherished colleague. Doug was an adored husband, a kind and devoted father, and an admiring son - family was his number one priority in life. He is survived by his wife, Becky; his six children, Stephen (23), Michael (22), Cara (19), Taylor (14), Cameron (12), and Parker (5); his father, Hal Sharratt; his mother, Beverly Larsen; his sister, Jan Smith; his seven nephews, two nieces and many close friends. Doug's positive spirit, unbending courage, and strength of character are found in his children - he will continue to inspire others through each of them. Douglas John Sharratt has left an imprint on each of our hearts - he is loved by so many and will be forever missed. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 31st, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Francis Catholic Church, 900 H Street, Bakersfield, CA  93301. Doug was a believer in the power of voice. CASA provides an advocate for every child who needs a voice in the court process. In lieu of sending flowers or gifts, donations may be made to CASA of Kern County, 2000 24th Street #130, Bakersfield, CA 93301 or kerncasa.org in the name of Doug Sharratt.

First, I would like to express my deepest sympathy for the loss of Doug to his family. He will be sorely missed and he leaves behind a great storied life of which I was glad to be part of. His passing serves to remind us all how precious life is and how we need to cherish our every day of life. He led by example and was a role model of a man, this I will never forget. I am so sorry for the hole he leaves in his family and can't imagine how difficult this is now. Just find peace in that he was a special man, loving husband and father, friend and neighbor, he blessed us with sharing his life. May he rest in peace.
My thoughts and prayers go to his family. God bless you all.
