Edward Hashim Obituary

EDWARD JOSEPH HASHIM SR.

March 7, 1927 March 9, 2023

Edward Joseph Hashim, Sr. (Pops) of Bakersfield, California passed away peacefully on March 9, 2023, with his wife Joan and family by his side. Ed is now with Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior, whom he loved with all his heart and whose message he would share with everyone he met.

Ed was born March 7, 1927 in Bakersfield, CA to Akel and Anna Hashim. Akel was a first-generation immigrant from Debel, Lebanon. They owned and operated an independent grocery store while Ed was growing up and watching them helped him learn and develop his own strong work ethic.

After attending Saint Joseph's Elementary and East High School, Ed joined the Army. He was a proud WWII Veteran and was recently honored to attend the unveiling of the WWII Memorial at Jastro Park.

After being discharged from the military, Ed attended a wedding in Salt Lake City where he met the love of his life, Joan. He spent two years courting Joan before they married and eventually settled in Bakersfield. Together they raised six children.

Ed worked for Arden Farms for 25 plus years and then found his calling as a Personal Trainer at Strength and Health Barbell Club. This marked the beginning of his weightlifting career and is where he met many lifelong friends, many of whom were much younger than he was. At age 75, Ed broke the Washington

State record for the bench press in his age group. He loved being at the gym and was still working out just two weeks prior to his passing.

When his daughter Carol moved to Ellensburg, WA, in the early 90's, Ed saw his opportunity to follow and live out his dream of living in the Northwest, which he and Joan did for 17 years. He enjoyed the outdoors, picked up many new hobbies and made several new friends while living in Ellensburg. They

eventually returned home to Bakersfield in 2010.

Pops will be remembered for his love of Jesus Christ, talking proudly of his family, hosting gourmet Lebanese dinners, opening his home during the holidays to friends who were alone, becoming friends with the people at places he patronized and most importantly, for flexing his arms and chest to anyone

and everyone. He was full of charisma and left an impression everywhere he went. He loved people, and they loved him back.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents Akel and Anna Hashim and sister Mary Murphy. He is survived by his wife of 74 years Joan; his children: son Ed Jr. (Judy), son Bill (Suzanne), son Tony (Elizabeth), daughter Carol Gombos (John), daughter Lori (Jane Morgan), son Kevin (Jenny); fourteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren with two great grand-daughters due in May; and brother

David (Arlene). The family would like to mention Pops long-time breakfast group Jim Wooster, Mitch Willoughby, Stewart Gentry and Joel Brock, all of his friends from the gym, his church, and from the many other places he frequented. The support that each of you provided Ed and Joan before and after his passing has been heartwarming and wonderful to witness.

We'd also like to thank Shannon Shoemake, who helped us care for Pops, and Hoffmann Hospice, who helped up give Ed a peaceful and loving homegoing.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Bakersfield National Cemetery on March 31 at 10:45AM, followed by a Celebration of Life at Stockdale Country Club at 2PM.

I knew Ed from the church we attended and the gym that Joan and Ed attended. I valued our friendship greatly. He is with the LORD now, so all is well. God's Blessings and comfort to Joan, a truly lovely lady.

I recall with great fondness how my family would go over to their house around Christmas Eve before midnight mass and join them and their extended family for wonderful Lebanese foods. Good memories of the entire family.

I am very sorry to read of Ed's passing. I knew of Ed from seeing him around his gym decade's ago when I occasionally worked out there. I had the good fortune to interview him and include him in a magazine article I wrote about local, inspirational athletes. He inspired me to start powerlifting (bench press) years later. Such a great man that influenced so many in a positive way. We should all strive to be more like Ed. Praying for peace and healing for all of his family.

We´ve known Ed since our early 20s. We met him at the gym Ed and Joan helped lead my wife to Christ and me rededicate my life. This was at our 25 yr anniversary party. Will always cherish his memory.
