I will always remember meeting Eddie out running one day. I was training to run in my first marathon and we just happen to meet up at Bakersfield College one day. We chatted for a few minutes and I told him I was running in my first marathon. He gave me some great tips on training. He suggested I train by running the stadium steps and doing "hills" as he put it. I was amazed what great physical shape he was in. I had seen him running quite a bit and being a teacher I had seen him around at track meets too and knew a little about him and his passion for running. I took his advice and finished my first marathon without quitting. I hit the wall at mile 20 but managed to finish around 5 hours. It gave me a great appreciation of runners as I started running late in life. He was truly an inspiration and truly made an impact on me! Reading about him in the newspaper made me feel privileged that I had met him. Please know that my heart goes out to your family! You know he is up there running those Heavenly hills! May God ease your sorrow during this difficult time! He will be missed by all that knew him.

My wife Kathy and I wish to send our condolences to the Lujan family.
"Chief" was two years ahead of me at Arvin high. I didn't know him well, but I was well aware of his running accomplishments.
A year or two ago the wife and I were shopping in Gottschalks. I was hanging around while Kathy tried on clothes. Eddie was also "hanging" around waiting for his wife. Before I knew it, Eddie and I were in deep conversation! We found out the two of us had attended Arvin High. That was all it took. We must have talked for thirty minutes or more. I enjoyed every minute of it.

Just today I caught up with the obits in the Californian. I was at Myrtle Beach last week, and my wife Peggy had knee replacement surgery this week, so my daily routine of checking got behind. Eddie was a dear friend of mine. I took lots of runs with him. I know he will be missed greatly.
A lot of us old runners are approaching the finish line. It is important that we are prepared to meet the One there who provided salvation for us. We want to hear Him say, "Good race."

Our neighborhood is not the same without the chief.
I would spot Eddie near the end of my daily runs. Tired and worn out as I was, I would always perk up and attempt good form for show, fishing for praise. I always got it, along with encouragement and warmth. He will be greatly missed, and his quirky character will not be forgotten, even by casual acquaintances like me!

I was shocked to see that Eddie Lujan passed away last week. Eddie always had a smile on his face and a word of encouragement for everyone he met. He was always willing to take the time to help everyone young and old. When I was coaching at CSUB I took my team to Hart Park to run the hills. It was the first day of the season and Eddie was finishing a 15 mile run. He greeted me with the usual " Hi, Coach- How's it going?" I told him I was bringing my team to get some hill running in for the first time. He eagerly volunteered to take them on the 9 mile course and show them the way; all the while talking and encouraging them. Eddie was Bakersfield's "designated runner". He started, encouraged, officiated, and coached many on their running journey. He added another dimension to the term " extra mile". I am sure that many runners in Kern County running the bike paths, roads, and trails will experience a feeling of encouragement that comes from a Higher Source-and give a knowing smile- Eddie will still be at work and with us. Thanks, Eddie, for Going the Distance.

Be Still
Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.
Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.
If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

I'm sad to hear about Eddie but so glad to have known him through running. Pete Wonderly is right-The world is a better place because of Eddie Lujan. I think of Eddie often-he changed my life. He taught me things about running and life that are not in books. I was 35 years old and trying to make the BC XC team-I was struggling. He took me that summer and built my base one week at a time. Our first run was "only" 13 miles-it freaked me out! Eddie taught me to relax and enjoy my running, taught me where all the water stops were along the way through the farm fields, and taught me the fine art of using a bandana to stay cool! I felt myself get stronger after each Sunday run with Eddie-and we had so much fun. We finished our program by running up Rancho Rio Road-an epic 20 mile run all uphill on the way out. I felt like Superman and had a great time running 2 years at BC-I don't think I would have made it without Eddie. Years passed and we stayed friends. We talked many times at BC and running events where Eddie was always willing to help out. What a good guy! I loved Eddie...he was great. Over the years I have told other friends about Eddie and his wisdom--and will continue to speak of my friend Eddie Lujan...his spirit still strides...I'm sorry I won't be at Eddie's "party" (as Eddie requested) on Wednesday because I'm in Atlanta. My thoughts are with Eddie's family and tribe...rejoice in this man and his life's journey!

Our condolences to the Lujan family. While Eddie is no longer with us physically, he will always be with us in spirit--at each and every run. He was the only person I knew who made every 5k, 10k, or marathon a social event. I will miss seeing him run through our neighborhood. See you on the bluffs Eddie.

To the Eddie Lujan family: Susan and I send our condolences to you all. My suggestion is that you remember Eddie during all of the wonderful times...the times you shared as a family. With Eddie, I'm certain there were as many good times as there were miles that he ran. He was extraordinary...not only as an athlete but as a husband, father, friend, and worker.
I first met Eddie when I was a track runner with his brother Alvino at Arvin High School. He was always encouraging...even later when we ran (me briefly)as adults on the Bakersfield Track Team.
We're all proud to have known you Eddie! Our prayers to the family.

Eddie was a unique individual - always friendly, a very competitive runner, yet modest about his athletic ability. We'll miss his smiling face and cherish memories of our time together.

I last saw Eddie Friday morning, August 4th, as we crossed paths - he running, I cycling - below Panarama Drive. As ever, Eddie was cheerful and encouraging, always graciously acknowledging the efforts of others. The world is a better place for Eddie having lived in it.

What a man. the last time I saw Eddie was in Auburn when he was up visiting. He and I went on a nice run in the American river canyon with Dennis Burkett. I remember several years ago passing him at mile 20 in the LA Marathon and he was cracking jokes and encouraging the first time marathoners. He was telling them he was just getting warmed up. I will light a candle for Eddie and remember him on my long runs.

I lived next door to Eddie during the late sixties and early seventies. He used to drive us to road races in his Chevrolet impala low rider. He was a great individual, athlete and friend. He will truly be missed.

I grew up in Mr. Lujan's neighborhood and was a chilhood friend and track-and-field teamate of his oldest son. I'll always remember the presence and support of Mr. Lujan and also seeing him running through the neighborhood (and entire city for that matter) training for his next big race.
He'll be greatly missed.

I ran some races with Eddie many years ago, and always found him funny and just a joy to be around. He was a very tough competitor. I will remember Eddie smiling and a very upbeat and gracious person. I will miss him.

Even though I hadn't seen Eddie in nearly 25 years, I would often think of Eddie from the races we ran when I lived in the LA area back then. I always looked forward to seeing him because he was quite the competitor and yet was also a warm, friendly man as well. I'm sure he is indeed setting daily pr's as he runs in Heaven. He will be greatly missed!
