Edward Searfoss Obituary

Edward Wright Searfoss, of Haleiwa, Hawaii, passed away on June 6, 2014 at the age of 34.
Ed Searfoss leaves behind his daughter, Elizabeth, who was his pride and joy. The two recently enjoyed some father-daughter time vacationing in Hawaii, exploring the big Banyan trees at Kawela Bay, hiking, and paddle boarding. While in Hawaii, Ed was able to visit his father as well as his sister and niece.
He is survived by his mother, Gail Searfoss, Killeen, TX; father, Ed Searfoss, Sr., Haleiwa, HI; sister, Jessica Marshall and sons, Mark and Jace, Harker Heights, TX; sister, Amy Searfoss and daughter Rain, Haleiwa, HI; grandmother, Searalla Henry, Harker Heights, TX; grandfather Ed Chapman, Grants Pass, OR; uncle Gary Chapman, Chiloquin, OR; aunt Susie Kirkland, Azalea, OR; uncle Jim Chapman, Bakersfield, CA; and many cousins and friends in Bakersfield and aunties, uncles and friends in the Hawaiian Islands.
A graduate of Kahuku High School, Ed attended Leeward Community College and later obtained his EMT certificate from UCLA's Center for Prehospital Care at the David Geffen School of Medicine.
Ed Searfoss embarked on his career in emergency medical services starting as an EMT with Hall Ambulance Service, Inc. in 2005. He quickly excelled in his newfound profession, rising to the high expectations of his employer. In 2006, Founder and President Harvey L. Hall, sponsored Ed to attend the paramedic program at Bakersfield College. As a medic, he continued to refine his skills and always exhibited compassion and kindness for those he provided careâ€"often resulting in handwritten customer compliments for his gentle bedside demeanor. Ed was promoted to the position of paramedic field supervisor in 2007.
In 2011, he was presented with the Company's Star of Life award for going above and beyond in the care he provided to a patient and his wife who were traveling through Kern County. Over a 24-hour period, Ed and another paramedic field supervisor teamed up to provide transportation to and from the hospital (30 minutes each way) and words of encouragement to the patient's wife, while she waited for family to arrive from out of state.
In 2012, Ed took a brief absence returning to Hawaii; however, he soon returned to the mainland to his friends and EMS family at Hall Ambulance in 2013. In July, he was appointed to the position of Director of Quality Assurance, where he once again proved himself through his dedication in providing important guidance and feedback on the documentation of the care delivered by his peers. He was also instrumental in assisting with a complete overhaul of Hall Ambulance's quality assurance practices. This led to Ed being named the 2013 Ambulance Division Support Employee of the Year.
Ed Searfoss was an avid power-lifter, constantly training and encouraging others about the importance of fitness and healthy nutrition. In November 2013, he competed in the International Powerlifting League's (IPL) World Championships, in Las Vegas, where he placed 5th with a total of 1,410 lbs.
He will be missed by his daughter, Elizabeth; David Ishii, his best friend of 30 years; his extended family at Hall Ambulance Service, Inc.; his roommates, Alex Sagasta and Mike Zapiain; and so many whose lives he touched.
A memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday, June 18, at 11:00 a.m. at RiverLakes Community Church: 4301 Calloway Drive (at Hageman Road) in Bakersfield.
In lieu of flowers, an education fund is being established in his daughter, Elizabeth Searfoss' name at Kern Schools Federal Credit Union.
