JIMMIE SHETTERS

August 14, 1938 - January 15, 2022

Born in Campbell, California, Jimmie moved with her family to Bakersfield when she was 14. She graduated from East Bakersfield HIgh School in 1956 and attended Bakersfield College. Jimmie worked for 15 years as a bookkeeper for Bernard and Sons Meat Packing Company before taking a position at Mercy Hospital that allowed her the opportunity to train to become a construction contractor and inspector.

Jimmie and her husband, Donald Shetters, established World Construction Services and specialized in hospital and school new construction, expansion, and renovation. In addition to overseeing a multitude of the construction projects at Mercy Downtown between 1975 and 2018, she was active in construction projects at Mercy Southwest, Memorial Hospital, Fruitvale, Norris, and Frontier Schools, as well as projects for the Delano School District.

Jimmie was active in the National Association of Women in Construction and served as Regional President in 1981-1982 as well as Regional Director from 1987-1988. She had numerous personal interests, including cooking, reading, going to the movies, and spending as much time as possible on the beaches of Central and Northern California. She was a terrific cook and greatly enjoyed preparing meals for family and friends, but she also enjoyed dining at restaurants, diners, food trucks, and lunch with colleagues and friends in the cafeteria.

Preceded in death by her parents, James and Dixie Prout, her sister Christie Connor, her husband Donald Shetters, and her son Jonathan Nord, Jimmie is survived by her daughters Kathleen Craig and Karla Craig-Birks, her sister Susan Tanner, many friends and colleagues, and her dogs Lucy and Rita.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Jimmie's honor to the American Cancer Society, Angel's Flight West, Freedom House Recovery Homes Bakersfield, or Marley's Mutts.
