Services will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Chapel, 3700 River Blvd., Tuesday, January 20, at 3 p.m. for John Daniel Owens Johnnie O.
John was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, on July 19, 1931 to Arabelle and Charles Owens. He passed away in Bakersfield, California on January 14, 2004.
John came to Bakersfield in 1951 to visit family and stayed until his death. He graduated from Bartlett High in St. Joseph, where he was a member of ROTC and won many marksmanship awards. John was employed by S.A. Camp Motor Co., and Barber Pontiac. In the early 1970s he went to work for Tosco Refinery until the refinery closed. He then went to work for Golden Empire Transit as a driver and retired 17 years later as a Transportation Supervisor and Trainer.
He was an accomplished musician. He played vibes for many years. He was an avid fisherman. John enjoyed many other activities including collecting depression glass, bears, and musician figurines, listening to and playing jazz, camping, boating, motorcycling, shopping on E-Bay, and most of all his grandson, Timothy.
John is survived by his wife, Delila Owens; sons, Todd Cook and Tim Cook; daughter, Leah Cook and grandson Timothy Cook, all of Bakersfield.
The family wishes to thank Dr. William Gilli and his staff, Dr. Rex Manayan and Dr. Mary Magalong for their excellent care and concern.
John was loved and admired by many people and will be greatly missed.
Casketbearers will be Milton Jennings, Everett Beed, Bruce Seibel, Elzie Woolfolk, Clyde Edwards and Johnny Blue.
Visitation begins Monday, 3:00 9:00 p.m.
