JOLENE YVONNE BILLIARD
August 19, 1931 – September 30, 2025
Jolene Yvonne Billiard, a devoted educator, beloved mother, and cherished member of the Bakersfield community, passed away peacefully on September 30, 2025, at the age of 94.
Born on August 19, 1931, Jolene grew up in Orange County, California, before making Bakersfield her home – a place where she planted deep roots, built a family, and dedicated her life to shaping young minds. Her passion for education was the guiding force of her life. Believing every child deserved the chance to learn how to read, she made it her mission to reach as many young learners as possible.
Together with her late husband, Donald "Lefty" Billiard, Jolene co-founded the Little Red School House, a beloved local institution that has served the Bakersfield community for over 50 years. More than just a school, it became a second home for generations of children and families who were touched by Jolene's warmth, patience, and unwavering belief in the potential of every child.
After Donald's passing, Jolene found lasting love and partnership with Dr. Alan Prebilsky, with whom she shared 32 meaningful years. Their bond was one of deep connection, shared purpose, and devotion to family, community, and education.
Jolene is survived by her three loving children: Sherrie Billiard, Sandy Billiard, and Don Billiard Jr. and his wife Jackie. She was a proud grandmother to DJ, Amber, and Charmaine, and a devoted great-grandmother to Hunter and Brayden. Her nurturing spirit, tireless dedication, and joyful heart live on in each of them and in the countless students and families whose lives she touched.
A celebration of Jolene's life will be held on Saturday, November 1st, between 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. at the Little Red School House, located at 4601 Fruitvale Avenue, Bakersfield, CA 93308. Friends, family, and former students are warmly invited to gather in remembrance, to share stories, laughter, and the enduring impact of a life so generously lived.
In lieu of traditional services, Jolene wished to be remembered with joy and gratitude. Her legacy – as a teacher, mother, partner, and friend – will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
