Melvin Cunha Obituary

With a heavy heart we announce the death of Melvin Cunha. Mel was born on July 16, 1942 in Bakersfield, CA to John and Mary Cunha, and died peacefully on June 19, 2017. He grew up on a farm in Bakersfield with his family where he attended local schools and South High. He married Brenda Sanders in 1962, and they had four children. Later in life he met Jan Tedford and they were blessed with their daughter, Starr. All his life, he loved riding and working on motorcycles, and became a champion hill climber. Those hill climbing days were some of the best times of his life. At 74, Dad was still cruising around on his motorcycle, and going to Pismo to ride his Banshee. He got a kick out of being the old guy still riding.
Mel was preceded in death by dear friends and family, including his parents, sister Linda, daughter Starr, and daughter in law Christina. He is survived by his loved ones: wife Jan; children Kelly, Connie, Justin, Amber, and Michael and their spouses; beloved grandchildren; and siblings Johnny, Mary, Frances, Babe, and Josie, and extended family and friends.
Enjoy the ride.....we love you.

Rest in peace Melvin . You have been a cherished friend since Greenfield Elementary School . In the late 1950ies when you rode your bike past our house on Taft Highway , my Dad would say "There goes Melvin Cunha on his bike ." Good , old , fond memories . Some of my greatest memories of my Uncle Melvin were coming to visit him, my aunt Brenda, and cousins with my family. We'd laugh, sit in his garage while he worked on motorcycles, and listen to his stories. He was a great story teller. I loved his big scruffy mustache and he gave big bear hugs before we would leave. Now he's reunited with Starr and all his family that is waiting for him along with so many others I love and miss dearly. Love and prayers to your family who will miss you greatly, Deanna Elcano Blaise

My uncle Melvin was a very loving, and fun guy. I have many memories playing at his house when I was a little girl.
I can still remember as a toddler , running to hide under my parents bed when he came over .
His loud motorcycle would scare me !
He loved to tease me, but always told me how beautiful I was.
He will be missed tremendously by my mom. I love how close all these Cunha's are with each other.
God bless all my family in this time of sorrow.
