Philip Davis Obituary

Dr. Philip H. Davis
July 2, 1938 - August 31, 2017

Philip has made his entry into the glorious presence of our Lord after three years of battling cancer. Philip was born to Charles and Eva Davis on July 2, 1938, in Healdton, OK. He grew up with three younger brothers, Gary, Gene and J.R., and sang with them as The Davis Brothers Quartet.

Phil attended Minnesota Bible College and earned a Bachelor of Theology in 1960. He met Ella Dennis while in college, and they were married in Ladysmith, WI in 1959. After earning his pre-med degree at Milligan College in Johnson City, TN, Phil attended Vanderbilt University Medical School in Nashville, graduating with his M.D. in 1966.

Phil was a captain in the U.S Army Medical Corps from 1967-9, serving one tour in Vietnam as a surgeon at a battalion aid station. He then did his OB/GYN residency at Kern County General Hospital in Bakersfield, after which he served at the Bureau of Indian Affairs hospital in Shiprock, New Mexico. He joined the San Dimas Medical Group in Bakersfield in 1973, practicing until his retirement in 2009.

His first wife, Ella, died just days after their 50th Wedding Anniversary. In 2011 and after being family friends for more than 35 years, Phil was married to Leanne Ostrovski until his passing.

During his years in Bakersfield, Phil served as an elder and teacher at Christ's Church of the Valley. He served on the Board of Directors of Pacific Christian College in Fullerton (now Hope International University), was a Director of the Christian Medical Association, and served as Medical Director of the Bakersfield Pregnancy Center. Phil sang as tenor in Bakersfield's Masterworks Chorale, making two European tours. With Ella, he participated on short-term medical missions to Guatemala. As an OB/GYN, he delivered an estimated 8,000 babies, finishing his career being named Bakersfield Physician of the Year.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Eva and Charles, his first wife Ella, and two of his brothers, Gene and J.R. Phil is survived by his wife, Leanne; by children Mark (Carrie) Davis of Canby, OR, Diane Giffey of Bainbridge Island, WA, Debbie Davis of La Habra, CA, Mike (Celeste) Davis of Aliso Viejo, CA, and by brother Gary (Jeannine) Davis of Oregon City, OR; by grandchildren Bethany, Tianna (Devon), Mataya and Ian; great-grandson Benjamin; and by step children Brian (Debi) Ostrovski, Amy (Landon) Bogan, and step grandchildren Houston, Tyler (Autem), Austyn and Dallas, and by step great-grandchildren Aiden, Analeeah, and Thea.

Visitation will be from 5-9pm on Thursday, September 7 at Hillcrest Mortuary, 9101 Kern Canyon Rd. The chapel service will be at 10am on Friday, September 8, also at Hillcrest. In lieu of flowers, donations in Phil's name may be made to Christ's Church of the Valley 'Missions Fund' at 13701 Stockdale Hwy, Bakersfield, CA 93314, or to Hoffmann Hospice at 8501 Brimhall Rd, Bakersfield, CA 93312.

Dr Davis was on my mind this afternoon, so I looked him up. I was certain he´d be retired, but it is heartbreaking to hear he´s passed. I became a patient after having a mid-pregnancy auto accident. He was the kindest, most gentle physician who made generations of women feel safe and cared for in their most vulnerable moments. When he delivered my third son, there were complications; however, he was such a calm and skilled physician, I had no idea there was a problem until I was home with my baby and my husband explained the notes I was reading in the discharge papers. He calmed and reassured my husband, silently telling him everything was going to be okay while tending to the emergency and safely delivering my sweet boy.

Dr. Davis was a wonderful man. I just learned of his passing. He was my ob/gyn and saw me through two successful pregnancies, 2 of his 8,000+ babies. I so appreciated that he was a Christian and that is why I chose him. One of our daughters is now seeking an ob/gyn from the San Dimas Medical Group. My belated condolences go out to his family.

Phil was a fine Christian role model through out the time he attended Jr High and High School at Lindsay, California. He did his best to attend all our High School Reunions, the last being the 61st. It was a pleasure to have known him and share classes with him in the '50's. Our sympathies to his family and especially his beautiful wife LeAnn. May God be with you all.

Dr Davis was a very kind man. Wonderful Dr and it was clear to all he loved his God. He lived a full life and will be greatly missed. My prayers are with his family.

Dr Phil Davis was one of the finest men I have ever known. He became a friend in the late 1950s, during our years at Minnesota Bible College in Minneapolis, where he astonished all with his academic brilliance, discipline, and absolute commitment to Christ. Following his Bible College career, he went on to become an outstanding doctor. Though our lives took us to widely separated parts of the world, we maintained our friendship through correspondence. I sincerely mourn the passing of a humble servant of God, and look forward to meeting him in glory. All comfort to Leanne. Leroy Randall, Perth, Australia

Dr Davis was my OB/ GYN with my last two children. As a Bakersfield native, my family and I moved to Virginia when my youngest was 2 in 1996. My Dr's here had big shoes to fill for sure, and I did find good ones, but I never forgot the wonderful, kind, caring and very dedicated Dr Davis who saw me through chicken pox and shingles in the 2nd trimester of my 4th pregnancy.I never forgot him and am so saddened at his passing. He was one of a kind and I have no doubt he is singing with the angels today. RIP Dr Davis. You touched my life and many others.

Dr. Davis delivered my first child in 1983. He was so kind and gentle with me. Frankly I did not have an easy pregnancy. He would encourage me each month and tell me you are almost there. When he asked me what the baby name was and I told him he responded with a very detailed explanation of one of the names and the biblical importance of that particular name. Growing up in church myself that gave me comfort that he was a man of faith. Reading this now I understand just how much of a man of faith he truly was. He is I have no doubt in heaven reaping his so deserved rewards from our heavenly father.

Dr Davis was my doctor since I was 16 and had to be seen for my 1st of many ovarian cyst. He made me feel like a normal young girl. He was with me thru 5 more and all ended up in surgery and was also there for me thru 2 miscarriages. Again he made me feel like it was a normal thing and that I was a normal lady. He was so easy to cry to. He was my Doctor until I moved to Oregon. He was one of the best and his caring heart made him a great doctor. He will be greatly missed. I loved his smile and I remember when I worked at Michael's and he'd come in and he acted like he was so happy to see me. It was his personality and God surely broke the mold with him. Heaven has gained a great Angel. Love always

Doctor Philip H. Davis, a truly amazing man, gifted and talented. Your encouragement inspired me to do something I thought I could never do, an interpreter on a Guatemalan Medical Mission! I will always remember you wil high regard and utmost respect. Rest In Peace, rest in Paradise in our Father God's Holy Presence. "Well done thy faithful servant, 'Well done!'"

Dr. Davis was my doctor for 25 years. He delivered both of my children. He was the kindest doctor who spoke with a low voice. He will always be remembered as the "kind" doctor. May God soothe the heart of his family members.

Dr. Davis was a great man. He was my doctor for many years. I remember him always asking me to remind him which Hartzell daughter I belonged to at my doctor visits. He will be greatly missed. Hugs and Prayers to all his family and the many that knew him.

Dr. Davis was my doctor for nearly 20 years. He always had a kind word and listened to his patients, taking those feelings that something just doesn't seem right that expecting mothers sometime have very seriously. This willingness to listen very likely saved my youngest child's life. Very few doctors have such a wonderful bedside manner, even in the middle of an emergency. My sincere condolences on his family's loss and I hope it brings you comfort that he is no longer suffering.

He was my doctor for 30 years. He delivered both my girls and at a time in life when going through a serious health crisis and not having insurance, he treated me without charging me except what the lab work was. Humbled me beyond measure and I know he is receiving the heavenly gifts he so deserved. After my treatment I left a card on his desk with the scripture "God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.
Hebrews 6:10
Rest In Peace Dr. Davis

September 7, 2017

Sorry to hear this news. Dr Davis delivered my first 2 children in 1982 & 1985. When Dr. Davis found out I had no insurance and was making cakes and cookies to pay cash for my first unborn child, he reduced the price by $100. It was $900 at that time and he was very proud of me for earning every penny to pay for my sons delivery! He made me feel so happy & proud. At delivery day he held up my son and said so here is your gift for all your hard work. He was a very respected man and doctor in this town and I will never forget him.
Rest in Peace and sing with the Angels Dr. Davis.

Dr. Davis was my OB/GYN for well over 20 years. I had 2 children thanks to him finding my early stages of cervical cancer and recommending me for experimental laser surgery. He was a wonderful Dr. with a caring heart and great bedside manner. I am so sorry for your loss.

My love and condolences go out to Dr. Davis' family, friends, and everyone that crossed paths with this wonderful man. I'm sure everyone feels a huge loss. I was blessed to have him as my doctor, and to have him deliver both of my children. He has always had a place in my heart.

I recently ran into Dr. Davis in our neighborhood. After all these years, he was still the kind and loving man I remember. What a gift to me to see him one last time, and be able to introduce him to my infant granddaughter.

Dr. Davis leaves an impressive legacy in our community. He will be remembered with great fondness and respect.

Funny story: I saw Dr. Davis during my first pregnancy in 1998. When I was admitted to Mercy SW Hospital, he arrived to check on me; he broke my water and said "It's going to be a while and I've got choir practice.." so you have to leave me? I remember thinking what?; wait, what just happened here! All turned out well and now I have a wonderful 18 yr old son!

My heart goes out to the entire Davis family at this time of loss. I worked with Dr Davis in his OB practice for several years. His skill was only bettered by his faith and kindness extended to all his patients. He is free and enuncumbered by a tired physical body and rests in the arms of his Savior.

Dr. Davis delivered me as a baby in 1984. He was then my OB/GYN for my pregnancy and delivered my son Aidan in 2005. My mom and I loved him and he was such a sweet doctor. The opitomy of what a doctor should be and always took time to talk to his patients. And he was so kind. RIP

Dr. Davis delivered our precious son Michael on June 19,1980. Michael was born with an Omphalocele and Dr. Davis calmly covered his abdomen with saline to keep it from drying out. He saved Michael's life that day. He later told me that he was so thankful that Michael lived because the last baby born like him didn't make it. He was sweet, thoughtful and a wonderful man. May he rest in peace
