PHILLIP JESSE CAMPAS

January 23, 1986 July 25, 2021

Phillip Jesse Campas was born January 23rd, 1986 to his loving parents Jesse and Christine Campas. Two years later his sister Adrianna was born, and the family of four was complete.

Phillip attended Noble Elementary, Washington Jr. High, and graduated from East Bakersfield High school with honors in 2004. While attending East Bakersfield High School, Phillip excelled in football where he earned the role as starting quarterback during his sophomore year. Upon Phillip's graduation, he followed in his father's footsteps and valiantly chose to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in 2005, where he attended and graduated bootcamp from Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) San Diego.

In 2008, Phillip was deployed to Afghanistan where he was stationed for nine months as a machine gunner. In 2010 Phillip graduated from the Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) Parris Island as a drill instructor. Upon his graduation from MCRD Parris Island, Phillip was assigned to MCRD Parris Island as a drill instructor for the next three years.

During Phillip's service and dedication to the Marine Corps, Phillip was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Marine Corps Drill Instructor Ribbon and numerous other medals throughout his military career.

On March 14, 2011 Phillip married the love of his life Christina Nicole Vargas. Phillip began the immediate role as a father figure to Christina's son Eli. Shortly after, Phillip and Christina welcomed two beautiful girls to their family, Camila Rose (2012) and Analissa Mae (2015).

In 2015, Phillip was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps and moved his family back to Bakersfield, California. Shortly after, Phillip graduated from the Kern County Sheriff's Office's Kern Regional Training Center Academy for peace officers, where Phillip was the Class Leader and received the Top Overall Recruit. In February 2016, Phillip was hired by the Kern County Sheriff's Office and started his career as a Deputy Sheriff. Phillip had numerous roles with the Kern County Sheriff's Office, including a Patrol Deputy, Swat Team Operator, Assistant Range Master, Honor Guard Member, Physical Training (PT) Instructor and Recruit Training Officer (RTO) . In addition to his duties at the Sheriff's Office, Phillip volunteered his time as an instructor and mentor to the young youth involved in the Devil Pups Organization, where he made a lasting impact challenging, educating and helping young boys and girls learn self-confidence and responsibility. Phillip served his community for five years until his end of watch on July 25th, 2021.

Phillip is preceded in death by his maternal grandmother Consuelo Chairez, beloved paternal grandmother (Nana) Rose Campas and father-in-law Arthur Vargas. Phillip is survived by his wife Christina and children Eli (14), Camila (9), and Analissa (6), father Jesse, mother Christine, sister Adrianna Hernandez (Moris), nephews Nathan (godson) and Lukas and niece Lucila, mother-in-law Mayra Rodriguez (Cornelio), brother-in-law Art Vargas (Erica), nephew Ethan and niece Liv, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

There are no words that can express the loss of such a amazing person. I met him when I started at the jail but got to know him better when I transferred to training. He always came in with a smile and just a good person. He will be missed dearly. My prayers go out to the family and friends. May you keep him in your heart as he will always be with you.

My heart and prayers go out to his entire family and loved ones. I met Phil by way of his good friend John Calvillo when he had brought him in to my barbershop when they were in high school. From there he had became a regular in the shop, and then family. He made sure he stopped in for a cut when he would come back on weekends from bootcamp. There was even a time when one the hairdressers in the shop had fainted while working, without hesitation, he hopped out of the chair and tended to her and made sure she was ok until she was able to receive additional medical treatment. That selfless act was such a natural reaction from him. Thank you to everyone that poured into him and made him the courageous person that he became, he will never be forgotten!

You lived a life filled with great honor and purpose. The legacy you leave behind is a reminder that God plants angels and heros on this earth to help us and guide us. My family thanks you for your service and sacrifice. I pray for you, and for your family and friends who will miss you so dearly. I pray for our community, and all those in service who are shattered by this tragedy. I pray that your sacrifice will some how alter the relentless crime spree we are seeing in our community. Perhaps our law makers will see you and say enough is enough! Thank you and God Bless you!
