Richard Reding Obituary

RICHARD KEITH REDING, SR.

September 10, 1935 March 17, 2024

Wasco Richard Keith Reding, Sr. was born September 10, 1935, in Montgomery County, Tennessee to Richard Carroll Reding and Leola Keith Reding. He was the first of their three children, followed by a brother, John, and their little sister, Sue Ann. Sometime later, the Reding children's dad became the Sheriff of Cheatam County, Tennessee. He enlisted in WW2 because he possessed the skills needed, so his wife, Leola, finished his term as Sheriff!

In Mayfield, Kentucky, his family lived catty-corner backyard to the family which included Sarah Lou Workman. He was smitten! They married on October 8, 1955. Into this union were born Richard Keith Reding, Jr. in 1958 in Kentucky, and Sue Kim Reding in 1962 in Bakersfield, California.

In between the births of their children, Richard and Sarah moved to Wasco, California, and built a life of community involvement and contribution. Richard taught physical education, health, and typing, at Thomas Jefferson Junior High/Middle School for 35 years! A gymnasium has been built and named in his honor at the recently remodeled and renamed Palm Avenue Middle School, merely 1/2 a block from their home!

Richard and Sarah were involved in the annual Wasco Rose Festival for many years and once served as the Grand Marshals of its parade. They were faithful members of Grace Community Church in Wasco.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, RC and Leola Reding, his father-in-law, Carvil Workman, and brothers-in-law, Jim, and Donald Workman. He is survived by his wife, Sarah, his brother, John, and John's wife, Mary, sister, Sue Ann, son, Richard Keith Reding, Jr., daughter, Sue Kim Reding Edwards, and her husband, Doug Edwards. Also surviving Richard is his daughter-in-honor, Sandy Reding.

Papa will forever be loved by grandchildren Kristen Edwards Denton and husband Ryan, Patrick Reding, Leslie Edwards, Christopher Reding, Jordan Reding and his fiance Maritza Anaya, and great-grandchildren Parker and Morgan Denton.

Dad's viewing will occur on Friday, March 29, 2024 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Peters Funeral Home, Wasco. His funeral will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2024 at 10:00 am at Grace Community Church, Wasco.

My parents moved to Wasco at about the same time that the Redings moved to Wasco. My Dad taught at Thomas Jefferson Junior High/Middle School with Mr. Reding for most of that same 35-year time span that he taught there. We also lived in the same neighborhood and Mr. Reding was my P.E. teacher when I attended Thomas Jefferson. Needless to say, I can remember hearing the name "Dick Reding" as far back in my life as I can remember anything.

Mrs. Reding, Kim, and Keith, please accept our sincere condolences.

I met Richard Reding at Kern River Transitional Care. He was my dad´s roommate. I enjoyed hearing his memories. Richard had a great personality. He will truly be missed. Condolences to the Reding family.

Sincere condolences to the whole Reding family. I first met Richard in 1977. My brother-in-law, John, Richard´s brother, took me to Wasco to learn how to Dove hunt. It was a great trip. Richards father Dick (the original Pops!) John and Keith and I hunted all over Wasco, it was a memorable trip, my first of many experiences with this great man, and great family. For many years, our families would spend time crabbing in Bodega Bay. In 2010, Richard, John, my 2 boys and I arrived early and set the nets out in the ocean. Our boat was almost capsized when taken by surprise by a rogue wave, we were soaked. We dodged a near tragedy that day and knew every day from then on was a gift! While I only usually saw Richard and Sarah on those weekends, he often spoke of how proud he was of his girls high school championship basketball team and the lessons he taught them. He talked of his time as a trustee on the school board and the accomplishments they achieved. He was kind and generous with all his God given gifts. Life well lived Uncle Rich, rest in peace.

In loving memory of Coach Richard Reding, fondly known as Pops. He was my basketball coach during my high school days at McFarland High. As the guiding force behind the Lady Cougars, he left an indelible mark on my life. Pops instilled discipline and determination with every sprint and drill. I wanted to be just like him and would ask for his advice in my coaching days. I am so glad I got to visit with him in the last months of his life. He loved anything chocolate and still remembered many stories from his days with his Lady Cougars. Pops, you will be dearly missed, but your legacy of passion and perseverance lives on in each one of us. Rest in peace, Pops. ~Shannon Campbell Ford Red #21
