I was talking to a former Postal colleague and Robert's name came up. She had no idea he died and, when I told her he indeed did, she was very saddened. We were in agreement that we appreciated his laid back management style which never interfered with him being a genuinely decent and kind person. My best to his family even as the years have rolled on.

This is a poem I dedicate to you Robert.
You will be missed, my friend.
In Our Hearts
We thought of you with love today,
But that is nothing new.
We thought about you yesterday.
And days before that too.
We think of you in silence.
We often speak your name.
Now all we have is memories.
And your picture in a frame.
Your memory is our keepsake.
With which we’ll never part.
God has you in his keeping.
We have you in our heart.

My condolences to the Nicholas family, I'm so sorry for your loss. It isn't going to be the same out there on the ball field without our "Mongoose". Robert, you were a great pitcher, a great hitter, and a great friend! I'm so thankful that Glenn brought all of us together to play ball. I admired you so much for putting up with Nik and Austin. You were always able to rise above their sarcasm and drop that ball on the plate! And I always appreciated how much you cared about my little girl, always asking how she's doing. It showed what a caring, thoughtful, and compassionate man you were. We're going to miss you Robert! God bless you and your family.

Robert, I was so lucky to have had the opportunity to work with you. You started out being my boss, and ended up being my friend. I knew you had my back no matter what, and that I could count on you always. We all miss you so much. I will especially miss your sarcastic sense of humor,(even when it was directed at me!)You had such an impact on the lives of those around you. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. God Bless.

Robert, I feel as though I have lost a "Brother" and John a "Son". Our hearts now have an emptiness that cannot be filled. We loved you not only as a co-worker, but as "Familia". Your energy was a force that noone else could match. Not even me! John will miss one of his "Partners in crime". You will never be forgotten, and as long as both John and I are in the Postal Service, employees will know what a great Manager and person you were. You leave a strong legacy of what the word "Loyalty" means....

I had the opportunity several years ago to transfer back to Bakersfield after commuting for several years. Fortunatly, I was assigned to the Brundage station where Robert was the manager. His good natured attitude made my transition a breeze. Not only was it a pleasure to work for him, it was easy working with him. I have to give him a lot of credit for helping me build a solid career foundation.
He never gave up on trying to recruit me and my husband to play softball. He truly was the office cheerleader. He changed the work environment that surrounded him with a big grin and never missed an opportunity to crack a joke, even when those joke were at my expense. I will miss that.
As I write this, his presence is missed by every employee here and they have all been sharing their own personal experiences over the past several days.
Our deepest sympathy is extended to his wife and children, and I hope they know how much he was loved and appreciated by all of us.

Roberto, I can't believe you are gone. You were my good friend and I will miss you so much. It's hard for me to picture playing softball with no "Mongoose" on the mound. You were such a big part of my life. You've left a huge hole that I can't possibly fill. I pray that you are with God and I pray golf courses in heaven all play to a huge slice. Goodbye my dear friend.

For those of you who did not know the business side of Robert I can tell you a few things as I was his boss. In the few years that I worked with Robert I had the opportunity to promote him twice. He worked hard to achieve these promotions. Robert had the desire to be the best and while he pushed his units to new levels of achievement he never did so at the expense of those that worked with or for him.
Aside from being a good manager, Robert was the office cheerleader, a bit of a gossip, and our activity coordinator. Robert was always trying to get us out to play softball, football and various other activities that lead to more than one injury.
I will miss him. I know that those that worked with him will miss him as well. He was a part of our postal family and we all share in the grieving. While we do not know why Robert was called home so soon, you can be assured that he is already organizing his next softball tournament.
