Robert Tracy Obituary

ROBERT WILLIAM "BILL" TRACY

October 16, 1942 – November 7, 2024

Buttonwillow – While Alive, He Lived.

Robert William "Bill" Tracy, aged 82, passed away on November 7, 2024. Born on October 16, 1942 to Tilton and Kathryn Tracy. Bill grew up on the ranch, attended Wildwood (2 room) Grammar School, graduating from Wasco High School in 1960 before pursuing further education at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

After being activated in the United States Army Reserve in 1968 he returned to the ranch and family continuing his dedication to what he knew best.

A fourth-generation farmer from Buttonwillow, Bill was deeply rooted in the agricultural community, serving on several boards. He was an integral part of Tracy Ranch, a multifamily farming and cattle operation that originated in 1862. Beyond the fields, Bill's real education came from his selection to participate in class 11 of California Agricultural Leadership and the National Cotton Council "Cotton Leadership Program" sponsored by DuPont. These programs not only honed his public speaking and networking skills but also deepened his understanding of agricultural policies and practices.

In 1987 Bill was appointed to serve as the Undersecretary for the California Department of Food and Agricultural under Governor Deukmejian. Known for his usual attire of boots and a cowboy hat, he was a passionate advocate for the farming community. His tenure at the state level provided him with a unique perspective on government operations.

A passionate historian, Bill was particularly fascinated with the Civil War and both World Wars. This enthusiasm fostered a longtime friendship with Jack Bell and John Gibson which our family is truly grateful.

Beyond his historical pursuits, Bill instilled in his grandchildren by example, the desire for travel. His travel adventures took him exploring all seven continents with his wife over 40 years, including multiple cruises with family, friends Dale & Carol, and his last cruise to Norway in September 2024 with John & Donna. In July 2024, 50 years of marriage was celebrated in Tahoe with his family, reminiscing the memories of spending many summer vacations there.

Bill's enthusiasm for farming was well-known, but his finest crops came with each grandchild, devoting countless hours supporting them, attending various sports, dance and piano recitals along with erecting a TeePee on Fourth of July.

He is survived by his wife Susie, children, Mark Tracy and his wife Allison, Todd Tracy and his wife Annette, Rob Tracy and his wife Kathy and Stephanie O'Callaghan and her husband Kevin; eight grandchildren: Haylee, Kathryn, Grace, Trent (our favorite grandson), Maggie, Izzy, Clarisse and Lilly; brothers John Tracy and his wife Donna, David Tracy and his husband Jerry; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Thank you to the crew at Willow Ranch and to Bea, he missed roll call.

Special thanks to Todd and Stephanie, who provided immense support during his last moments.

Contributions in memory of Bill can be made to the Buttonwillow Lions Club Foundation, P.O. Box 121, Buttonwillow, Ca 93206.

Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 23, 2024, at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 12300 Reina Road, Bakersfield, CA.

The world has lost another good one. I got to know Bill and his wonderful family through 4-H and the fair. I always looked forward to being around them whether it was weighing pigs for the fair, the annual ranch bbq, or just crossing paths at a store, he always had a smile and something good to say. Sure going to miss those times. My best goes out to Susie and the rest of the family. Tom Pinnell

Bill was an amazing man. I enjoyed our conversations at the table at Flying M Aviation at Shafter Airport. Great insights on the on the world state of affairs. He loved to listen to "war stories" from us old Vietnam guys. He will be missed by so many. I am honored to have known him

Bill will be sorely missed, especially at this office. I worked and seen him every day for 11 years and counting. I could always count on him for guidance and for a signature on a check, LOL. The loss of Bill leaves a huge hole in our lives. The office will not be the same without him. My family and I send you our condolences and we share the burden of your loss and wish you all peace.

He isn't "making roll call" here but he is 'making roll call' in heaven.

Much love and prayers to you all.

I worked with Bill at CDFA. No one was more committed to California agriculture than Bill Tracy. He worked as hard as anyone I knew but liked to have fun doing it. God speed my good friend!
