Susan Coyle Obituary

SUSAN CUNNINGHAM COYLE

February 26, 1949 - February 2, 2022

Susan was the loving and devoted wife of Jim Coyle and they were so fortunate to have shared 32 wonderful years. Susan was born in Wisconsin. She was the daughter of Dr. Ralph Cunningham, the first thoracic surgeon in Bakersfield, and Ruth Frease Cunningham, who was educated as a nurse, and who transitioned into motherhood raising three thoughtful people, siblings Tom and Sally, who have all strived to make the world a better place than when they entered. She is survived by nieces Kevan Fegeley and husband Alex, their son Alexander, another niece, Ryan Kee. She had nephews Mark Cunningham, his wife, Keri, and great-nephews, Hunter and Brogan, and nephew, Michael Cunningham

Susan had many interests. First and foremost were people. She loved family and had such enjoyable recollections of times they had at home and on trips when they could muster time to get-away from a busy doctor's practice. Susan enjoyed their family trips to the Central Coast where she enjoyed the beach, gorgeous sunsets, New Year's night card games, July 4th fireworks on the Cayucos pier and Morro Bay fireworks near the marina, the rare whale sighting from the beach, and fish and chips, crab cakes, and other fresh seafood. The family made such good new friends there and also visited with valley friends who travelled to Cayucos. She volunteered her time as an Assisteen, a program with the Assistance League, at the Bargain Box. She enjoyed her friends from her sorority, PEO, and due to her decreasing mobility was not able to keep up with meetings as she previously had. Susan also enjoyed doing needlepoints and gave many of them to friends. She had a passion for jigsaw puzzles and, unless she had a little bit of a time crunch, it didn't matter whether it had 200 pieces or 2,000. She loved hot black tea and it was a staple to her. Susan loved her own and her family's dogs over the years including April, Posey, Josephine, Whitey, Ruthie, and Ione.

Susan took great comfort in her faith and had become Catholic, but her heart had always been with God.

Susan had a medical condition since birth and she took good care to preserve her health. She was so appreciative to the doctors and other medical professionals who have taken such good care of her over the years. She truly was a miracle. Thank God!

Susans service is Wednesday, March 9 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. The Rosary is at 10:00 AM followed by Mass at 10:30 AM and a graveside service at Greenlawn Southwest.

I'm very sorry to hear of Susan's passing.
Susan was a wonderful person, always with a positive attitude and outlook. She and her husband Jim were a great match for each other. I used to enjoy their company on many occasions for dinner or short out of town trips. They were fortunate to have found each other and I was fortunate to be their friend since even before their marriage. May she rest in peace.

Jim, I am so sorry about your loss. It has been a melancholic time remembering Susan in her more active years.
I found this fun picture of our P.E.O. Chapter MB (Many Blessings) at a favorite traditional Pie in July treat at Marie Callender's in 2013.
It was just a while ago I remembered the only time I had chocolate souffle was when our friend Debbie asked her over to share the cheese souffle I was making. Susan thought she'd keep up the theme!!! Yum!!!

As a fellow member of SEAS I know our congregation prays for Susan and was pleased on two occasions to hear her name said aloud at masses. As a PEO member, I was more pleased to know her. I especially loved one Guild House PEO luncheon moment with her, A special lady through and through. I feel so happy that she was blessed by a devoted husband named Jim. He was and is a Superstar for her family and friends. God Bless you always Jim. -- Though this time is so hard, remember our shared faith and the Lord's love and promises for us all.
