Suzanne Rivera Obituary

Suzanne Jane Rivera September 18, 1964 - May 13, 2012 Suzanne Jane Rivera (nee Brodie), 47, of Bakersfield died on Sunday, May 13, 2012, as a result of injuries suffered in a bicycling accident during the Mariposa County Women's Stage Race. A devoted wife and mother, Suzanne is survived by her husband of 17 years, Scott Rivera; and their children, Nicholas, 14, and Kate, 12. She also leaves behind her parents, Ann and Dr. Ian Brodie; and her sisters, Amanda Andres and Emma Terry. Suzanne was born on September 18, 1964, in Birmingham, England. Suzanne moved with her family to California when she was 8 but remained a British citizen her entire life. She spent her summers as a child in Wales with her mom and sisters while visiting her grandmother, whom she loved dearly. She was raised in Seal Beach and attended Long Beach State University before marrying Scott and moving to Bakersfield, where they raised their children. In addition to her family, Suzanne's passion was athletic endeavors. Suzanne had a genuine zest for life that influenced and inspired people, from family, friends, and teammates to people who praised her endurance and drive, telling her she motivated them. Suzanne had two unique dimensions. She was a very kind and soft person who wanted to please her family and others and who lived simply and naturally. She also was determined to excel. Initially, her passion was tennis; she played at Orange Coast College and Long Beach State. When she turned to running, she pursued the sport with intensity. She ran countless marathons, winning one. In recent times, she greatly enjoyed cycling, which she approached with her signature focus on excellence. She also continued her lifelong love of swimming that began when she swam competitively on the Seal Beach Swim Team. While pursuing her athletic endeavors, Suzanne would strive to make each day meaningful for her family. Every birthday, every holiday was a special event. Suzanne was a happy person who made other people's lives happier by her presence. Her enthusiasm for life and living was infectious. There was nobody who did not like her. In everything she did, Suzanne Jane Rivera lived by the motto, "Love is an action." She will be greatly missed by her husband, children, mother, father, and sisters and everyone who knew or ever encountered her. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2012, at Greenlawn Southwest Celebration of Life Center, 2739 Panama Lane. To Suzanne and to the family of Suzanne - I still see her pink ribbon in the Sky as she races in Heaven. Yes, you are not forgotten and I will pedal for you.

Suzanne, you are remembered by even those who barely knew you....as you pedaled by on your bike with veracity and a pink ribbon. I knew from a distance, you were a lovely power house and I admired you immediately. My thoughts are still with your family, and your cycling community will never forget.

I had the pleasure of knowing Suzanne for several years because our sons were school friends. She quickly became my friend. What an amazing spirit she had. She was so cheerful and energetic. When I was around her, I felt uplifted...joyful. Im so glad I was fortunate enough to call her friend.

I don't know how to begin this, exactly. But I have thought of your wife, mother, daughter and sister many times. I lost a letter she wrote me years back telling me of her marriage and that she was moving to Fresno. I didn't know how to find her, and although I knew what city she lived in down in So Cal, I couldn't remember how to find the house. It is only tonight that I am deeply saddened that I didn't find her before this moment. Suzanne was my best friend at Long Beach State and times spent with her were joyous. She made me laugh, taught me that my room was in a tip, my hair tie was a bobble and made going to class great fun. I lost touch with her for a season when she left Long Beach State for a stint of time, and I didn't know how to reach out to reconnect. I am truly sorry for your loss, I can't begin....there are no words. I will be uplifting all those who loved Suzanne in prayer and praying for the peace that passes understanding when understanding doesn't make sense. Christ be with each of you!

I never met Suzanne but I was there that weekend and she has been on my mind ever since. I wrote this poem for her last night.

"mariposa"

long before you came along
in the hills above mariposa
there were these tall pine
trees and this sweet river
birds settled on branches
sang songs then flew on
the sun warmed the earth
and dipped down at night
to let the moon take over
now that you have come
and gone, in those hills above
mariposa, the rythm remains
only now you are forever
part of that joyous refrain.

I'm praying for you and the children Nick & Katie. This is a difficult time in your life, however God will bring you thru it. Suzanne would say,
(Miss Me, But Let Me Go)
When I come to the end of the road and the sun has set for me, I want no rites in a gloom filled room.
Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little, but not to long and not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love that we shared, miss me---but let me go. When you are lonely and sick of heart, go to the friends and relatives we know.
Bury your sorrow in doing good deeds, Miss Me---But let me go.
Author unknown.
It is hard to realize that Easter Sunday at the park would be the last time, I would see Suzanne & talk. You both have a lovely family. God Bless.
