Thomas S. Maddock
1928 - 2018
Thomas S. Maddock passed away peacefully in Newport Beach CA on February 3, 2018. Thomas was born to John Francis and Eileen Smothers Maddock in Norfolk VA in 1928, where he also graduated from Maury High School. He later graduated at Virginia Tech with a BS degree in Civil Engineering and completed his graduate work at MIT with a MS degree in Engineering.
In the Korean War, Thomas attended Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport RI and was commissioned an Ensign in the Navy Civil Engineering Corps. He was assigned to the Navy Seabees on the construction of Naval Air Station Cubi Point in the Philippine Islands. He was later stationed at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro CA.
After active duty, Thomas graduated with a MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business. Thomas continued in the Navy Reserve, rising to the rank of Rear Admiral and Commander of the 18,000-man Reserve Naval Construction Force (Seabees). He retired in 1985 after 33 years of active and reserve duty with two Legion of Merit Medals, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Navy Commendation Medal.
Thomas began his work career in 1957 with Boyle Engineering in Bakersfield CA, where he took on major state and worldwide water projects and became President and CEO in Orange County in 1975. He became Chairman in 1993, retired in 2001, and continued to work as a consulting engineer. Thomas was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1993 and later as Honorary Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). He was a Distinguished Alumni of Virginia Tech, School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and served on numerous boards and societies; he was a licensed professional engineer in 18 states. In 1993, the Governor appointed him to represent CA on the Western States Water Council-part of the Western Governors Association. Rear Admiral Maddock served on the Board of Trustees of the Navy CEC/Seabee Historical Foundation, and a new US Navy Seabee Museum was built in 2010 at the Port Hueneme Naval Base. He was also instrumental in the support of the Maturango Museum in Ridgecrest CA where his wife Caroline donates her archeological publications and artwork.
Thomas is survived by his wife Caroline Maddock of Newport Beach, daughters Victoria Maddock and Kimberly Clark, granddaughter Lillian Clark, and many nieces and nephews. Thomas was preceded in death by three brothers (John, Joseph, and James) and two sisters (Mary and Patricia). Thomas was an avid tennis player and enjoyed hiking in Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada mountains. He was a true patriot who loved serving his country, and he was a kind, intelligent and honorable man. He will be greatly missed by family and friends alike. In honor of Thomas' wishes, no service will be held, and any donations may be made directly to Hoag Hospital Foundation.

To the family of Tom Maddock, I'm so sorry for your loss. I met Admiral Maddock in the spring of 1988 when he came to speak at the Seabee Ball at China Lake.We made our first trip to the petroglyphs that weekend and that was the first of many memorable visits. We enjoyed hiking with Tom and Caroline in the petroglyphs and in the Sierras. Tom will be missed by all of his many friends.

Thomas was a dear and kind gentleman and a true patriot. We are so blessed to have shared many experiences with Thomas and Caroline in Sedona over the years, from hiking in the red rocks to dining in our favorite hotspots and stargazing on the casita patio.
Our memories at Enchantment with the Maddock's are rich with adventure and so many laughs. Thomas would often stay behind to read the Wall Street Journal and meet with the tennis pro while we joined Caroline to explore ancient Native American ruins and amazing pictographs she had discovered. Thomas knew full well we would never be back in time for happy hour.
Thomas shared so many stories of his Navy trips to Europe among other wonderful destinations including the time the USS Tang submarine nearly sank. He spoke highly of the many fine comrades he and Caroline reunited with at the annual Seabee balls and other Naval gatherings.
We are so pleased and thankful to Thomas' family, friends, the guys from the gym, and Navy comrades for the phone calls, cards, visits, and support. The photos of the 2016 Memorial Day service at Pacific View with the Rear Admiral in his dress whites and Caroline at his side will be cherished. We know Thomas is in a safe place in heaven now. Dear Carolina, Curtiss, Marsha and the Maddock family,
I'm so sorry for your loss. I was in the ADM's first command, RNMCB-17. He was very proud of his time in the battalion, as well as I, for my time in the battalion. He was a true SEABEE and spent many years promoting the "green-machine" and the Seabee Museum. His love for Naval history was also extended to the Maturango Museum in Ridgecrest which we supported. We, at Ridgecrest/China Lake, will miss the Maddock's at the upcoming Seabee Ball. My 102 year old mother-in-law dearly loved her time with Tom and Caroline, sharing several dinners together prior to the China Lake Ball.

I just learned that Tom had passed away and it is hard to put into words the sadness and loss that I feel. I am sure it is nothing compared to what his family is feeling, but I have been cutting his hair for over 40 years, and we have, as I have with many of my clients, established an odd sort of platonic love affair/friendship/relationship that goes beyond what my words can express. He attended my wedding, and prayed for me through my bout with chemotherapy. I learned so much from Tom over the years I am profoundly sad, and I will genuinely miss him. Toward the end he had suffered a stroke and I had been cutting his hair at his home. And I looked forward to our visits. Rear Admiral Thomas Smothers Maddock -- RIP and godspeed my friend!

Dear Caroline and Tom's family. I had the honor of serving as Tom's Chief of Staff. We were together on Naval Reserve assignments for over 15 years traveling all over the world. He was truly a remarkably preeminent engineer, a proud American patriot and my Navy mentor. We remained friends after our retirement. Ginny and I send our love and deepest sympathy to Caroline and Tom's family.
May he rest in peace with the Lord.
