Wanda Stone Obituary

Wanda Alice Stone April 6, 1911 - November 12, 2012 Wanda Stone, 101, passed away peacefully on Monday in her sleep at home. She was the daughter of Clara and Sam Long of Arvin and was the eldest of six children. In 1933, she married Lindsey Stone and was his loving wife until his passing in 1986. They began their married life in Oklahoma and later moved to Bakersfield. Among other things, Wanda enjoyed fishing with her family, canning with her sister, and gardening and working at the local polling place during elections. There she got to know and visit many of her neighbors. Wanda always cared about the people around her and had a fabulous memory for names and family details. She attended Valley Baptist Church, where she became good friends with those in her Sunday school classes. Wanda has been lovingly taken care of by her son, Jim, for the past several years, allowing her to continue to live in her home. In addition to Lindsey, Wanda was preceded in death by three of her four children, Ernest, Joyce Johnson, and Bob; sister, Lena Tudor; and her three brothers, Olin, Carl, and Russell. She is survived by brother, Ernest Long of San Luis Obispo; her son, Jim of Garden Grove; 16 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and multiple nieces and nephews. Wanda was considered "sweet and precious" by all who met her. The volunteers and workers at Meals on Wheels and Optimal Hospice Care always enjoyed coming to the house. The family would like to thank those involved with both groups. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 20, 2012, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Chapel, 3700 River Blvd. A chapel service will be held on Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to either Meals on Wheels at Rasmussen Center or Optimal Hospice Care. Did anyone check the corn crib or with Carol June when they were searching for one of Grandma's bags? She has so many treasures we have yet to find. Everyday is an Easter Egg Hunt at Grandmas!

I always loved it when ms. Wanda made tha poultice for my feet. She taught jimmy sherrill how to cook with cayenne pepper and to keep it out of her eyes. We been a-searching all over for one of her famous bags but can't find one anywhere. We can't figure out where it disappeared to.

Tamale time is not as much fun. Sure miss you but don't miss Lightnin' flinging those poinsettias at Duane every time he ran low on Beefeater. You lived a great life and touched many people. Crybaby Cannon took your death really hard. But we know you're in a better place.

Can't believe your gone, I was so sad to hear of your passing. All the fun times we had at the Renegade games ringing that cow bell when they would score, my hearing has never been the same. Rest in Peace, you are truly missed.

So sad you are gone. I will never forget teaching you how to make kimchee. You cooked excellent Korean barbecue too.

Today would have been JL's birthday and it bought back memories of all those fishing trips we took. I remember when you hooked that big'un and JL got the net caught in the prop. I jumped overboard and became a human gaff. I still have a picture of that monster.

I remember your grandsons used to love your spaghetti and make faces at Johnny through the window. I don't think he meant to break that window.

Can't believe you've been gone since November. It's not the same, making a big pot of beans without you there. I remember when Lindsay and Howard would eat three bowls each and start a-yellin' "fire in the hole." Sure miss you.

Topper was a great dog. He could fetch the salt shakers JL threw at you. I used to laugh and laugh. Thank you for taking me fishing.

So sad to hear about Grandma Wanda's passing. When the mean neighbor kids beat me up and called me "Crybaby," you gave me ginger snaps and milk. When you and Grandpa would pack the fudge and send it to the troops around this time of year, I always admired that and have continued that tradition. Rest in Peace.

So sad to hear of Wanda's passing. Her and Lindsay were great neighbors. It was hilarious when we raced up the canyon to see who got to Lake Isabella first. The loser bought the beer and I had to buy plenty of it since Lindsay drove a straight line on that curvy road. And Wanda's house was always clean as a pin. Rest in peace.

Without you there would be no Tasos Boys. Mike learned to be really nice once he saw how that cayenne pepper treatment worked and Marty never had to have the switch when he was afishing and we all know how Lindsay would take care of Boo. Those Boys sure loved their Grandma.

So sad for the loss of Mrs. Stone. She would always buy pomegranates from me during the summer. It was fun climbing in that big tree and then having to burn the leaves in the front yard.
I will miss you.

You were always so nice to me, letting me sleep over. It was fun going hunting with Jim, although sometimes scary. I remember jumping around on the "Snap, Crackle, Pop" bed.

I remember what a great neighbor you and Lindsay were, always helping me. And that grandson used to get the biggest kick out of throwing rocks and knocking me out of my lawn chair when I was sleeping off a bender.
