William Walsh Obituary

William Francis Walsh M.D. died after a long illness on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 2008, in Bakersfield, CA. Bill was born in San Francisco on December 18, 1925 and raised in Eureka, CA. He left high school for an accelerated admission to Stanford University then enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II where he served with the 165th Infantry Regiment. From March to June 1945, at age 19, Bill Walsh served his country as a medic during the Battle of Okinawa, the largest and last major amphibious assault in the Pacific Theater. Bill met the love of his life Ann Kimber as a child while vacationing in Ventura, CA; they were married on Dec 27, 1947, a union that lasted for 60 years. He graduated from Stanford Medical School in 1951 and began the practice of family medicine at Ventura County Hospital where he did his residency. Bill later moved to Camarillo where he practiced family medicine for 22 years, raised a family of eight children, and delivered and cared for many Ventura County residents. Dr. Walsh was instrumental in the building of Pleasant Valley Hospital in Camarillo. His interests focused his practice on family care: prepared child birth, breast feeding, and natural family planning. He founded the Ventura County Right to Life League. In 1976, Bill and his family moved to Lancaster, CA, where Bill served as Director of the UCLA Family Practice Residency Program. He continued his medical practice with his son Tom J. Walsh, M.D. It was honestly said of Dr. Walsh that he never put personal gain above his care for his patients, and he never met a person he could not talk to [sometimes forever]. Even in retirement in Idaho, Bill practiced medicine in a limited way for 13 more years. He moved to Bakersfield in 2006 to be near his family during his final struggle with lung cancer. Bill is survived by his wife Ann Kimber Walsh of Bakersfield and his eight children: Kathy Campbell, Oakland, CA; Mary Frances and husband Paul Lafranchise, Bakersfield, CA; Kimber and wife Robyn Tucker Walsh, Klamath River, CA; Tom and wife Annie Tobias Walsh, Yerington, NV; Sheila Walsh, Flagstaff, AZ; Ruth and husband Jeff Godde, Rosamond, CA; Pat and wife Catherine Rushing Walsh, Camas, W A; and Mike and wife Anne Hughes Walsh, , Jamestown, OH. Bill is survived by 35 grandchildren and one great grandaughter. He is preceded in death by his infant son William Francis Walsh Jr. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Monday evening, March 24, at St, Michael's Chapel. Bakersfield. A Traditional Requiem Mass will be held at St. Michael's Chapel at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, March 25. Bill Walsh will be buried at Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura County. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Life Center of Ventura County or to Optimal Hospice of Kern County. May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rain fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, Mav God Hold you in the palm of His hand William Francis Walsh, M.D. 1925 - 2008 Doughty-Calhoun-O'Meara Funeral Directors

Dr. Walsh was our family doctor when we arrived in Camarillo in 1963. For a ten year old, doctor visits are never easy but his kindness and gentleness made the experience bearable. In addition, his large family were a special part of my growing up in the early years of Camarillo. Their father was a generous man of deep faith and compassion.
Along with his family practice, Dr. Walsh made weekly visits to attend the needs of the seminarians at St. John's Seminary. He provided healing and comfort along with a bed side manner then that many wish was found today. May he be at peace.

The joys of our life, our four children, came to us through the dedicated care of Dr. William Walsh. His name was placed on the altar of Monsignor Ruscitto in Traver, California many years ago with our gratitude. He has been and will continue to be remembered weekly in the traditional mass.

With our deepest sympathy to Mrs. William Walsh and family.

Dr. Walsh was the founder of our community's hospice program. He trained nurses, volunteers, and staff. He also served as our physician's peer review administrator, gratis. When I think of our small rural hospital, and how far we've come, I know that we've been extremely fortunate to have Dr. Walsh and his wife Ann as guardian angels. I know I speak for all of us here at Teton Valley Hospital when I say, "It's been an honor, Dr. Walsh. God Bless."

Dr. Walsh,
May you rest in peace. Heaven has just received an earthly Angel. You guided me to this earth on my birthday, stitched my forehead and vaccinated me against disease.

What a wonderful man!! I can't even begin to imagine the lives he has touched over the years with his bright eyes, quick whit and healing hands. Dr Walsh was my pediatrician in the 50's and my daughter, Kelly (Farner) King, was one of his last deliveries at Pleasant Valley Hospital in May 1976 before he moved to Palmdale. He often spoke of how difficult it would be to leave the community he had taken care of for so many years but he also looked forward to a new adventure as he moved on. May the wonderful memories of your husband, father & grandfather bring you comfort during this difficult time.

Dr. Walsh, my Hero!! Ken and I arrived in Camarillo in 1961, me eight month's pregnant. Newly married and not knowing a soul, Dr. Walsh was our first friend. He subsequently delivered all three of our kids and let us pay what we could each month; usually $5. He then kept all five of us well and healthy for the next 15 years. I'm sure there are many stories like ours. What a guy!! He'll be greatly missed.

Like many Camarillo kids of the 1950s and 1960s, I was Dr. Walsh's patient for many years, as were my parents. He kept me going through my teens and twenties, and I last saw him as a patient when I was nearly 30 and about to move to the East Coast. He was a first-rate family physician and a fine man, and I'm grateful to have known him.

My deepest sympathy to you, Ann, and your family.

Dr. Walsh was our wonderful family physician in Camarillo in the 50's and 60's. He delivered my two children, Teresa and Mark Wimberly in 1956 & 1958 in St. John's Hospital....before the Pleasant Valley Hospital was built.
You may remember my parents, Nina and Alfred Higgins, Dad was the owner of Higgins Market in Camarillo. Dad and Bill sometimes played golf together.

Dr. Walsh was an excellent physician and a highly respected in the community.

With warm memories of the good doctor.....God bless.
