Alan PARTIN Obituary

Dr. Alan Wayne Partin, M.D., Ph.D., former Director of the Brady Urological Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital, died peacefully at home on March 28th in Fork, MD. He was 62.

Alan was born on March 16, 1961 to Philip E. Partin and Marilyn L. Partin in Warren, OH. He had a love of football, which led him to a celebrated run as an offensive lineman at the University of Mississippi. He achieved Academic All-SEC honors and received the National Football Foundation UM Chapter Scholar-Athlete Award. Alan earned his BA in chemistry in 1983, graduating Summa Cum Laude.

From Ole Miss, he went on to pursue his Ph.D. (1988) and M.D. (1989), at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, receiving his Ph.D. in pharmacology and molecular science. He wrote 50 manuscripts by the time that he had graduated, and went on to establish himself as a leader in the field of prostate cancer.

Alan's training and career kept him at Johns Hopkins, where he was promoted to Professor of Urology in 1999 and eventually to Director of the Department of Urology and the Brady Urological Institute in 2004. He has published more than 600 scientific papers, acted as editor for a number of texts on the subject, and received a number of outstanding awards. He also developed the Partin Tables, a computer model that utilizes mathematical formulas to help prostate cancer patients get accurate estimates for the success of treatment.

Despite a busy career, Alan also had a love of life that was matched by few. He enjoyed travel and was routinely found visiting friends in foreign countries. He also loved hosting at home. Alan would host the annual residents party at his home, as well as frequent events for both friends and family throughout the years. Guests in from out of town always had a spot in the Partin home, and Alan was always available with a smile and a glass of scotch.

Alan was preceded in death by his parents Phil and Marilyn Partin and brother David Lee Partin. He is survived by his loving wife Vicky, their children Topper and wife Jen, Dane and wife Elisa, David and wife Sara, and Michael and wife Abby, and their families which include several grandchildren, Andrew, Ella, Julia, Cora and Samuel. He is also survived by his brother Mark and wife Renita. He is beloved by many and will be deeply missed.

There will be a celebration of the amazing life of Alan Partin with details to follow. Online condolences may be sent to the family www.peacefulalternatives.com.

My husband and I just learned of the passing of Dr. Partin. We are deeply saddened by this news and send our sincere condolences to his wife, kids and families. We only met him a few times for treatment at John´s Hopkins but loved him immediately! He was a special man indeed and will be greatly missed.

I am so sorry to learn of my surgeon's passing. Dr. Partin provided me with understanding and patience in my search for a resolution of my prostate cancer, 3+4. His expertise including the anastomising (sp?) proceedure has enabled me to live a virtually symptomless life with undetectable PSA for over five years. I placed my faith in his deep knowledge and I have never regretted it, even with the knowledge that, as Dr. Partin told me, I may already , (presurgery) have metastises .

To the Partin family, and the Brady-JHU family too, deepest condolences on the passing of Dr. Alan Partin. I had the great fortune to work with him and his staff on clinical studies for prostate specific antigen as a young clinical researcher. He gave me opportunities to see his work with patients and to observe him performing surgery, which I have never forgotten. He also showed me that a brilliant physician and researcher responsible for so many lives can be funny and personable. I'm grateful to have known him. I hope his family and friends find comfort in the legacy he leaves behind.

Alan Partin was one of my anatomy partners along with Carolyn Grace Scerbo Kaelin and D'Ann Duesterhoff at Hopkins. He was an amazing anatomy partner and just a joy to know during my 4 years as a medical student and then as a resident. When my own father was diagnosed with prostate cancer in Florida, my only call was to Alan. His advice led to many years of cancer free survival until covid led to his demise in late 2020. Thank you for everything you have done for all the lives you have touched. You truly will be missed.

Dr. Partin thanked ME, for allowing him to treat me, so many years ago. The thanks should have gone in the other direction. He also adeptly used automotive metaphors to explain exactly what we were going to do. He was an excellent mechanic. My sincerest condolences to the Partin family and Hopkins colleagues.

I was only at the Brady for two years, but Dr. Partin always made me feel incredibly welcome and like a part of the team, even if I was just a lowly fellow. The respect and admiration of the entire organization for his leadership was palpable. My condolences to the Partin family and to the Brady family - we have all lost a giant and his impact will continue for generations.
