A Eulogy From His Wife
Bernie and I dated for 2 years and got married in 1947. This December would have been our 57th anniversary. He was a very caring and loving husband and father to his sons Marty and Scott. We had many good times together. He worked very hard as a salesman selling candy and tobacco. Prior to this he was on the police force for 7 years. He loved it, but left the force as I worried constantly about his life being in danger. He retired at 62 years of age.
We didn’t go on many vacations except for occasional trips to the ocean when the children were young. He also loved fishing and went fishing whenever he could. We loved going to local beaches on Sundays and picnicked there until closing time. Our life was a simple one. We enjoyed going to the movies and out to dinner. He loved TV and could watch it for hours.
My only regret in life was I would not let him have a German Shepard dog. He talked constantly about it, but I felt our house was too small. I wish I would have let him have what he wanted most, but it’s too late now.
As a young boy he loved to draw cartoons and we have many of his art works that he did. When we bought our first house in 1953, we talked about his drawing cartoons on the extra bedroom walls which would eventually be a nursery. Our first child, Marty was born in 1954 and he drew cartoons on every wall of the room and also on the ceiling. His sister Eunice loved it so much she called the newspaper and they came to the house and took a picture which was published in the newspaper. As he got older, his hands got shaky and he couldn’t draw anymore.
He spent many years in ill health and about 2 years ago his kidneys failed and he had to go on dialysis 3 times a week - 3 hours each treatment. He was rushed to the hospital this past Tuesday with severe pains and the diagnosis was not good. He had many things wrong with him. He was critically ill and in much pain. He died in a coma with his family all around him. I hope he knows we all loved him. He is now at last free from all the suffering he endured for years. We all miss him and he will be in our hearts forever. He is at peace now.
Love ya
from Marcia, Marty and Scott
