Friends may call at the family owned MITCHELL-WIEDEFELD FUNERAL HOME, INC., 6500 York Road (at Overbrook Road), on Friday, April 24 from 9:30 A.M. to 11 A.M., and proceed for a memorial funeral mass to be offered in the Immaculate Conception Church, Baltimore and Ware Avenues, Towson, MD 21204 at 11:30 A.M. Interment private.

Charlie and I were faculty colleagues for many many years. I always admired his intellect and humor. We worked on very different topics so it was only just before he retired that we finally got around to collaborating. Among the numerous memories I do recall him telling me a funny story at one of his house parties. I was in rapt attention - but had one too many - and while leaning back to laugh I disappeared off the stool into an open closet. Charlie watched me all the way down.... never pausing his story for even a moment. Looking up from the floor there was Charlie hovering over me with concern - not for closet or contents - but to see whether I was still listening! One paid attention when Charlie had something important to say.

I am fortunate enough to currently occupy the research space that Charlie did so much amazing work in years ago at UMB. It was a privilege to get to know him toward the end of his research career and I will never forget his humor and his straight-talk ways.
