David Marshall Obituary

On January 29, 2023, David Philip Marshall, beloved husband of Barbara Marshall (nee Fyffe); devoted father of Sean R. Marshall, Patrick J. Marshall and his wife Kelly, and Timothy D. Marshall and his wife Stephanie; loving grandfather of Elizabeth and Luke Marshall, and Connor, Brigid, and Keiran Marshall; cherished brother of Stephen E. Marshall and his wife Meg. He is preceded in death by his parents, H. Janet and C. Robert Marshall.

A lifelong Marylander and a proud native of Baltimore, Dave grew up on Benninghaus Road in Govans and attended St. Mary's School, where he developed countless friendships that continued throughout his life . He then attended and graduated from Calvert Hall College in 1965. He was an energetic, dedicated, and generous alum, serving on the Calvert Hall Board from 2001 – 2008, and remained active in all things Calvert Hall. He also graduated from Towson State College, and served in the United States Coast Guard Reserve. For 49 years, Dave was a financial planner and advisor through Merrill Lynch, rising to the position of Senior Vice President and leading a group of 5 professionals. He was greatly respected at Merrill Lynch and throughout the Baltimore business community, with many colleagues and clients becaming dear friends. Dave possessed a truly memorable personality and had an uncommon ability to make and keep friendships at every point on the path of his life, from Govans, the Hall, professional offices, baseball card stores, swimming pools, lacrosse fields, restaurants he frequented, and Ocean City, Maryland, where he enjoyed so much time at his second home. The greatest of these friendships was with his beloved wife of 42 years, Barbara, the perfect companion for all that made Dave one of a kind. He passes on a strong legacy to his three sons, Sean, Patrick, and Tim, each of whom was fortunate to be able to call their father a friend. "Grandpop" will also be remembered lovingly by his grandchildren, with whom he shared fun down the ocean, along with a few Berger cookies and spice drops. In his own words, not bad for a kid from Govans.

The family will receive friends at the family-owned Ruck Towson Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 York Road (Beltway Exit 26) on Thursday from 6:00-8:00pm and Friday from 11:00am-1:00pm, at which time the Memorial Service will begin at 1:00pm. Interment Private. In lieu of flowers, the Marshall family requests that donations be made to Calvert Hall College.

David was a truly great guy. Whether it was bantering in the office, playing softball, coaching Little League together or catching each other on the run, he always was full of good humor and interesting talk. David was proud of Barbara and his boys, and always made them part of his conversations. Sometimes we get lucky and I got lucky knowing David. I will - we all will - miss him.

Like so many, I knew Dave from St. Mary's (1st grade) and remained friends for life. I also attended the Hall with him. He was always interesting to be around and great to do business with. Cathy & I enjoyed our occasional dinners with Dave & Barbara. As the obituary says, Barbara was the perfect companion (& the perfect foil) for him.
Our sincere condolences to the entire Marshall Family and especially Barbara. He'll be missed by many.
