Davon Michael Cruz

Davon Cruz Obituary

CRUZ , Davon Michael Davon Michael Cruz, was born on June 27, 1980 in Hammonton, New Jersey, first born child of Carmen Cruz Jones. He suddenly departed this world on January 1, 2011 to be with the Lord. Affectionately known to some as "Butch", he spent most of his childhood in Egg Harbor City, New Jersey where he attended the public school system before moving to Glen Burnie, Maryland. Davon loved to play the drums and taught himself by banging on pots and pans as a baby. He would later use his skills while attending church with his grandparents in Egg Harbor City. He gave his heart to the Lord and was baptized at an early age in the Church of the Living God, under the pastorate of Bishop C.C. Mays. A graduate of Glen Burnie Senior High School in 1998, Davon went on to attend Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Virginia where he received his bachelor's degree of science in Information Systems Management in 2002. Davon was an accomplished athlete in both football and track, receiving numerous awards and trophies in both high school and college. As a member of the Bridgewater College Eagles, Davon became an All-American at Running Back. He helped to lead Bridgewater to the Stagg Bowl in 2001, and was a key player in their success. The walls of Nininger Hall at BC are still covered with pictures of #15, where he is still listed as holding records in Rushing, All-Purpose, and Scoring. Shortly after graduating college, Davon then went on to play football in the European Football league for the Lazio Marines in Italy. He was most recently employed as an IT Help Desk Technician at LMI in McLean, VA, where he was said to be loved and appreciated by management, co-workers, and customers. Davon also worked as a Personal Trainer. Davon had an infectious smile that would truly light up any room he was in, and his laugh was unforgettable. Those who were blessed to know him were well aware of his love for the Philadelphia Eagles- truly a passionate and diehard fan. Everyone who knew Davon loved him because that is just the kind of effect he had on anyone who crossed his path. Newly engaged, Davon and his fiancé were excited to start planning their wedding for the summer of 2012, after Chris returned from her tour in Bahrain. He leaves to cherish his memory: his mother, Carmen Cruz Jones and her husband Vance of Glen Burnie, MD; two sisters, Nicole Cruz Thompson and her husband Mario of Atlanta, GA., and April Clark of Glen Burnie, MD; fiancé, Chris Anderson of Hanover, MD; step-father, John Clark of Los Angles, CA.; grandmother, Ernestine Cruz of Egg Harbor City, NJ; niece, Briana Cruz; nephew, Emmanuel Dyson; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and many, many friends. He is predeceased by his dearly beloved grandfather, Francisco Cruz.
Viewing will be from 10am-7pm on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at Estep Funeral Home, 1300 Eutaw Place, Baltimore, MD 21217. Wake from 10-11am on Friday, January 7, 2011, with funeral service directly following at Empowering Believers Church, 7566 East Howard Road, Glen Burnie, MD 21060. Internment at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Brooklyn, MD. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Davon's name to his families college scholarship fund: "The Beatrice Mays Scholarship Fund", c/o Larkey Mays, 1301 Washington Avenue, Egg Harbor City, NJ 08215.

I would like to express my most sincere sympathy for Davon's family and friends; Davon was a fantastic co-worker! He was always willing to assist and walk me through a question/issue I had. I came to relay on him as I knew he would find the problem and get the solution. I am deeply saddened by the news of his passing. Davon would often say to me, “Hey, today is what you make of it- so make it a good day, and I will! You all will be in my thoughts and prayers. Sharon

Mrs Cruz,
I just want to let you know how much of a blessing your son is to me. When a person is as talented as he is, you often see an ugly side to that person in the form of arrogance. This man is very different. I am honored to have met him and have seen the people that came out to show their respects yesterday. Your family is in my heart and I thank you for your gift.

You were not only a coworker but like a brother to me. My thoughts and prayers goes out to your Family, just remember to stay encouraged because the Lord makes no mistakes. Rest in peace Davon..

Davon will truly be missed. I did not know him as well as some of my co-workers but he was always so kind, cheery, and helpful. I got to hear him laugh for the last time a few days before our office was closed for New Year's Eve. He was on my floor helping a co-worker with a computer problem. I pray God grants his family and friends an undescribable peace, comfort, and understanding as they mourn.

I had alooooooooooooot of good times with Devin growing up as a kid. Devon is 2 yrs older than me so when I were about 10 yrs old Devon, my brother Markie and I would always sneak out of church on Sunday morning just after the chior sang to go to the Egg Harbor City Creek near Moss Mill Rd. Most people in Egg Harbor City don't even know they have a creek but Devon know that creek inside out. We knew where it began and where it ended lol.
One time we lost track of time and Devon was scared that if we didn't get back to church before they let out, he would get a beating hahaha. (Now he's my big cusin and he's scared, so how do you think i felt. I was scared because he was scared.) What I most remember is Even though i was 2 yrs younger Devon never treated me like I was a little kid instead there was a since of protection he had for us. Thank you Big Cuz. I love you and will miss you!!

The only thing bigger and brighter than Deebo smile was his heart. He was definitely one of the warmest people anyone could know. You are my friend and brother. Not to mention the best Football player I ever played on the same field with, and I feel honored to have had you as a teammate, not to mention friend & brother. I dont think 10 minutes ever went by where we didnt end up laughing. I am glad I got to see you last week at my house bro and you may be gone from this life but will never be forgotten. How can anyone forget #15. Heart and prayers to the Cruz family. I already miss you bro.. I love you man,

I only had the pleasure of meeting Devon a few times, years ago, when I worked with his mother Carmen. What I know is his heart and beautiful smile came from the unfaltering love and devotion of his mother. Carmen, it brings me to tears to think of the pain you and your family are in. Because of your strong faith in the Lord we know Devon is with God now and he is looking down, and wiping your tears away. Devon you will be missed by everyone who was blessed to know you. My deepest condolences.

Davon,

Man what can I say. I met u my senior year in high school. Wish I would have had the priviledge to see u rip it up on the field in person. You was probably one of the most coolest dudes I knew back then. I haven't had the pleasure of knowing you as long as most but the time that I have known you will always be in my heart. Wow. I still can't believe u gone man. This hurts kid but now your heavenly has you back home. He loaned you to us for 30 years and we are all thankful for the time we shared. I just pray I make it to see u again when my time is called.
I am terribly sorry for the loss to the Cruz family. This pain u feel will never pass but will subside. That pain that you will forever feel the heart that Davon left in you. You no longer have to worry about his safety because he will be safe for eternity. My prayers will definitely be for your strength.

There are a lot of heavy hearts at LMI. Davon was truly a sweet and caring young man with a smile that would brighten any day. I'm so blessed that I got to know him. Continue to look to the Lord to find strength and know that he will comfort you at this time.

Davon,
I met you in math class when we were 15 and from that point, we pretty much saw each other every school day for the rest of GBHS and Bridgewater College. Some will say I was in the presence of greatness as an athlete all those years, but I truly remember just being around an awesome friend for 7 years. It was a great trip. I just wish we could have created another trip, but I have many memories to share with those of us who are left. I hope I can see you when the New Kingdom comes. Shalom bro. May Yahweh keep you. Love you man.
Sharif.

Cruz family/friends, you are in my prayers as I go through this pain with you.

I was so saddened to hear of the death of my nephew Davon. The last time I saw him he stopped by with my son Lawson Lipford-Cruz, his cousin for a visit when we first moved to Maryland--I believe he was in his 2nd year of college. I couldn't believe how big he was--and so handsome! Lawson always filled me in on how well he was doing in football and track. I still see Davon in my mind's eye as the mild mannered, beautiful little boy with the warmest smile, ever!
My heart aches for Carmen and the rest of the family. You are all in my prayers. Together, in CHRIST...

Life.....so fragile, Loss....so sudden, Heart....so broken,...in the wake of such a loss, we are haunted by things we don’t, and may never, understand. Yet the solace we seek may not come from answers. So we look for comfort in the belief of love's everlasting connection. May that love lift you and hold you close, and give you peace.
