Fredericka Courpas

Fredericka Kirk Elliott Courpas (93) passed away peacefully on July 29, 2025 with her children by her side.

Freddie was born on April 29, 1932 and raised on a working farm near Pottstown, Pennsylvania, where she developed a lifelong love of the natural world and of animals in all forms. She won the top prize in chemistry at Sullins Boarding School in Virginia before attending Carleton College in Minnesota for two years.

She raised her family on John Street in Baltimore's Bolton Hill neighborhood, where she lived from 1958 to 2017. In Bolton Hill, she worked as the church secretary at Memorial Episcopal Church, sang in the choir at Brown Memorial Park Avenue Church and tutored students at Mount Royal Elementary School, where her children attended.

In 1978, Freddie earned a BA in Theater Arts from Towson State University. She was a gifted actor, costume designer, seamstress, and makeup artist for productions at Towson and at Villa Julie College (now Stevenson University).

Freddie loved language and travel. She spoke a little Greek and French, studied Italian for several years, and traveled to Europe many times. She had a gift for connecting with people, no matter how brief the exchange-and treated everyone she met with curiosity and respect.

She cherished time at her cabin alongside a pristine creek in West Virginia, often with her children and grandchildren and always with the birds, bats, deer, and mice that visited her there.

Freddie enjoyed her new life at Edenwald, continued to maintain a positive outlook, and found ways to make people laugh with her quick wit.

She is survived by her children Evangelos (Geli) Courpas (Kathleen Thum) (Central, SC) and Maroudia (Mira) Courpas (Jonathan Puth) (Washington, DC); their father, Constantine A. (Gus) Courpas (Parkville, MD); her brother, Jim Elliott (Trout Creek, MT); grandchildren Asher Puth (31, Asheville, NC), Annika Puth (28, Washington, DC), and Maximos Courpas (19, Central, SC); two nieces, Judy Bradley Elizabeth Elliott and nephews Michael (Kay) and Robert Breuninger; two great nieces and their children Krista Leach and Timothy and Rebecca Granados (Reggie) and Lucy and Jude.



A private interment will be held at a later date.
