Corinne Z. Courpas, age 89, passed away on July 2, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt, Corinna Courpas was a woman of intelligence, drive, creativity, and kindness, possessing an optimism and generosity of spirit that will never be forgotten by the many people who knew and loved her.
Born on August 7, 1934, in Alexandria, Egypt to Greek parents Alexander Zoides and Marie Zgouros Zoides, Corinna Courpas was raised in the multi-cultural city of Alexandria, Egypt. Corinna excelled in academics and spoke multiple languages, including English, Greek, French, Arabic, and Italian learned from her Italian grandmother. She and her future husband, Anthony (Tony) Courpas both studied medicine at the University of Alexandria Medical School, where Corinna was chief resident.
She immigrated to the United States in 1959 and completed her fellowship in pediatrics at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She and Tony were married in 1963, and eventually settled in Baltimore, where they raised their two daughters, Nora and Tina.
Serving Baltimore's Greektown community for over 15 years, Corinna practiced pediatrics at Baltimore City Hospital and its pediatric clinics. After retiring in 1988, she dedicated herself to her family and community.
Corinne was an active member of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation in Baltimore, where she was a Board member, Chair of the Cultural Events Committee, president of the Women's Guild, a member of the Hellenic Heritage Museum Committee, and a Sunday School teacher. She brought many artists, authors and musicians representing the Hellenic culture to the Baltimore community. Always a generous hostess, she and Tony hosted for many years a weekend summer trip for the entire church youth group at their family home in Ocean City, a tradition continued to their grandchildren's generation.
Corinna expressed her innate creativity in many aspects of her life. She created artwork, crafts and Christmas decorations still cherished by friends and family. An avid painter, she studied at the studios of Bob Browne and Matthew Zoll, and painted scores of paintings which adorn the homes of her loved ones. Corinna was a committed tennis player and enjoyed piano, golf and Italian lessons in her later years.
Corinna and Tony Courpas travelled extensively to Greece and globally. They spent many happy summers at the family's second home in Ocean City, MD, and winters at their home in Naples, FL.
Corinna's family and friends treasured her indomitable optimism, graciousness, and good cheer towards all she met. She was a person of great insight who cared deeply for others, whether her family, friends, patients or community. She lived life to its fullest, and all who knew her will never forget her kind and loving nature and her contagious generosity of spirit.
Corinna Courpas was pre-deceased by her loving husband of 57 years, Anthony S. Courpas. She is survived by daughter Nora Vlahoyiannis and son-in-law Ted Vlahoyiannis of Baltimore, MD, daughter Tina Courpas of Greenwich, CT, grandchildren Corinna, Alexi, Maron, Marie, Melina, and Peter, nephews, nieces, and beloved friends.
