George David Shriner Jr.

SHRINER, JR. , George David GEORGE DAVID SHRINER, JR., formerly of Baltimore and Anne Arundel County, died May 7, 2012, quietly in his home in Lewes, Delaware of a long term illness. He was born on November 27, 1925 in Baltimore, Maryland to George D. Shriner, Sr. and Margaret Looney Shriner. He graduated from Baltimore Polytechnical Institute and from the University of Baltimore with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17. After completing recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot at Parris Island, SC he went on to serve in World War II as a radar operator at the Pearl Harbor, Hawaii Naval Base after the entrance of the United States into the war. He also served with the 6th Marine Defense Battalion on Midway Island and also in the Korean conflict. After completing decorated, meritorious service to his country after Korea, he was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps with the rank of Gunnery Sergeant (GySgt). Mr. Shriner was employed for 42 years at Montgomery Ward in both the Mail Order House as District Manager and in the retail side of the company as a Merchandiser and Store Manager. He worked at Ward's locations in Baltimore, MD, Chicago, IL, Verona and New Kensington, PA and Kingsport, TN. After retiring from Wards he took a job with the State of Maryland as a Real Estate specialist negotiating leased office space on behalf of various state agencies until his retirement to Lewes, DE. He was an active member with the American Legion Dewey Lowman Post #109 and the Catholic Church. He married Shirley Caspare Shriner in 1951 and had two sons, Ronald and Thomas. They divorced in 1979. He married again in 1985 to Shirley Hall (Nee Thompson). He was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley, in 2003; his grandson, Daniel Philip Shriner, in 2009; and his parents, George and Margaret Shriner. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Shirley M. Shriner; his children, Ron Shriner and his wife Brenda Conti Shriner, and Tom Shriner and his wife Loretta Rode Shriner; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; his brother, Charles Shriner and his wife Cathy; and his step children, Deborah Weidman and her husband Victor, William E. Hall, Jr., Mary Lou Netherton, Lisa Taylor and her husband Steve, Janice Castranda and her husband Joseph, James "J.C." Hall, Arlene Hall and her companion Laura Harris, Julie Caraniggo and her husband Jimmy and Scott Hall. He is also survived by 11 step grandchildren and five step great-grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors at Singleton Funeral & Cremation Services, PA, 1 2nd Avenue S.W. (at Crain Highway), Glen Burnie, on Thursday from 3-5 and 7-9 PM.
