James Gibbs Obituary

James David Gibbs, age 68, of Timonium, died on December 13 in his home surrounded by his family.  Jim was an adoring husband to his wife, Carol, for 43 years. He was a graduate of the Naval Academy and later the University of Virginia School of Law. Jim was a Naval officer, a corporate lawyer, and an international ministries pastor. Jim was known by his friends and family to be a caring jokester who loved gadgets, cooking, hiking, and gardening.  Jim enjoyed traveling and had a particular affection for the annual Gibbs family beach trip to Stone Harbor, NJ.  Jim was passionate about matters of social justice, considering himself an advocate for the poor and an ally for the LGBTQ community.

Jim is survived by his loving wife Carol, his mother Betty and his sisters Susan and Sarah. Jim leaves a legacy of kindness, strength and love in his children James (Kathleen) and Jeremy (Leandro), as well as his grandchildren, Fletcher, Henry, Emmett, and Anna.  He was devoted to his niece Ashley and her son Nathaniel.  Jim will be mourned and missed by many.

Jim's ashes will be interred in the memorial garden at St. Francis Episcopal Church in a small private service.

Carol and family,
Last night Diane and I were thinking about the time we went out for New Year's celebration with you and Jim. So I thought I'd send a FB message to reminisce on that, but we sadly saw that he had passed in 2020. Our paths haven't crossed for a long time, but we fondly remember Jim as wonderful and caring man and father. Please accept our belated and deepest sympathies. Terry and Diane

Another year has gone by and we mark the anniversary of Jim's "homegoing" praying that you are surrounded by a Christ centered community of faith and are healthy in body, soul and mind as Christmas approaches. I'm thankful for this ability to tell you that your family is not forgotten.

I remember Carol and Jim from UVA law school where they were involved with us in the law school fellowship. I am so sorry I lost contact over the years, not realizing they were so close in Timonium. I would have loved to hear of all his ministry and other activities since leaving law school. Carol, our prayers are with you and your family.

Jim has a very special place in my heart. He introduced me to my future husband when he and Casey were roommates at the Naval Academy. For this I am forever grateful. He and Casey are roommates once again. This time in Heaven. God bless!! Jennifer Stengle.

Carol & Family, Mrs. Gibbs, Sara and Susan,
My condolences to all of you. Jim holds a special place in my past and will always be remembered in my heart. The days at Dulaney and growing up were great times we shared. Sports, Young Life, Burger King, Ocean City, getting stuck under the OC bridge with Jim sailing the Hobie Cat. It was fun stopping by Jim's house. Dr. and Mrs. Gibbs always welcomed our gang and made us feel like family. Jim had the highest morals and integrity and you could rarely go wrong following his example (he did like to drive fast on occasion though). Jim was there for me 47 years ago when I got married to my Carol. Unfortunately I allowed life to get in the way and lost touch. The good times run deep and Jim will be remembered forever.

Carol & Family,
We are so sorry for your loss.
I remember Jim for his deep and abiding faith. I also remember his enjoyment and involvement with USNA annual NAFAC conference. I also enjoyed every debate we had about issues in the news at that time. We also were honored to have Jim participate in our wedding. All of you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Carol & Family - Barb and I are so sorry to hear about Jim's passing. He was such a good and kind man and a friend to many of us. I can honestly say if not for Jim's USNA match-making service, Barb and I would never have met. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to see you and Jim last year during the 45th reunion festivities. I now regret that would be the last time I would be able to catch-up on events in our lives.
I have attached a "very old" picture of Jim and me in London, UK from our Summer 1971 Midshipmen cruise to Europe. Its memories of the good times that keep us going. Love and prayers, Jim & Barb

I attended high school with Jim. As a teen I knew him as a gentleman, a truly nice boy, a smart guy. Not too long ago we responded on social media, so it was quite a start to see that he had died. My condolences to his family and friends.
