Jeff Jurgens Obituary

Jeff Jurgens, 52, of North Platte, passed away May 5, 2008, at his home.

He was born Jan. 17, 1956, to Douglas G. Sr. and Bette M. Jorges Jurgens at North Platte. In 1974, he graduated from North Platte High School. While there, Jeff lettered in football, basketball and track. He received the Most Valuable Player award in football, was a member of the All State Football Team and played in the Shrine Bowl. While attending college at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, Jeff lettered in football as a freshman.

On May 31, 1975, he was united in marriage to Connie Jorgensen at North Platte. He was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad as a switchman and a brakeman for over 32 years, hiring on in 1976.

Jeff was a truly dedicated husband, father, papa, brother, uncle and brother-in-law. He was a very confident man, who many came to for honest straight- forward answers. He loved sports, and spent most of his life traveling from game to game to watch his kids, grandsons, nieces and nephews. Jeff exemplified what it is to be a great man. He coached all youth sports, served as an announcer, board member and umpire for the American Legion Baseball. Jeff was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and UTU Local 200. All who knew him will sadly miss him.

Survivors include his wife, Connie of North Platte; a daughter, Jamie (Marty) Ruffin of Kearney; two sons, Jason (Juli Baranello) of Staten Island, N.Y., and Joel of North Platte; a sister, Nancy (Denny) Evarts and a brother, Tom Jurgens, all of North Platte; two grandsons, who he adored, Braiden and Jaylan Ruffin; a brother-in-law, Tim (Lori) Jorgensen; a sister-in-law, Linda (Dale) Ritzen; many nieces; nephews and good friends.

His parents and a brother, Doug Jurgens Jr., preceded him in death.

A memorial has been established in his name. Online condolences may be shared at www.carpentermemorial.com.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 9, 2008, at Carpenter Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Job Vigil officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens at North Platte.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. today with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Carpenter Memorial Chapel.

Talked to my mom today and she let me know of Jeff's passing. I've had no contact with Jeff since my high school or early college days but I will always remember him as one of my favorite coaches of all time. He and his brother Tom coached our Little League team when I was 12, exactly 30 years ago this summer. We had a blast that year. He was one helluva great guy and made it one of the most enjoyable summers I ever had playing. He followed my playing days all through Legion baseball and always had a kind word. He stayed in touch with my folks back in NP throughout the years and they both really admired him. Very sorry to hear of this sad day and condolences to his family.
